Jersey City, NJ Driving Tips
I would suggest leaving the road rage at home. It's a feisty neighborhood. You'll only give yourself heartburn wasting so much energy being angry at bad drivers.
Jersey City, NJ Buying Tips
There are a lot of dealers on major roadways in this area, especially near highways. BUY SOMETHING SMALL. There are way too many SUVs in a city that is overcrowded, where parking is already limited, and where streets can be EXTREMELY narrow. My favorite website is autofinder.Com because it's very comprehensive. Don't forget to check the CarFax!
Favorite driving memory
Driving in Jersey City and the surrounding neighborhoods - all small, crowded cities - is something of a nightmare. Double parking is rampant and unenforced, traffic lights are poorly synced, traffic signs are treated as suggestions, and the locals are quite honk-happy. For example, the light for a cross street has just changed from yellow to red, and the person behind you is already honking before your light turns green. It is a highly aggressive atmosphere to drive in. I remember one time taking a drive from Belleville, a mostly uncrowded suburb, to my aunt's house in West New York, a city bordering Jersey City. At no less than three lights between my point of origin and destination, the issue arose where the person behind me would honk before the traffic light turned green. Now, I am not saying that I am a passive driver, but I try to keep my road rage to a minimum. Not that day. After the first two instances, I was already cursing up a storm and highly agitated (one of the honkers cut me off in the middle of the intersection). My friend was becoming quite alarmed at my behavior. At the third light, a bus driver - for the handicapped - happened to do just this at a very narrow intersection. I snapped, the light had not yet turned green, but as it did I put my car in park, grabbed my coffee, took off my seat belt, and opened the door, preparing to take off the lid and throw my coolatta all over the driver's windshield. My friend, good soul that she is, bodily pulled me back into the car from the passenger street, and told me not to waste a perfectly good Mocha coolatta on such idiocy.
Favorite road
John F. Kennedy Boulevard East. JFK Boulevard East, Boulevard East for short, is fantastic to drive on. It is a long stretch of road on top of the Palisades, the cliffs that give New Jersey it's fantastic view of New York City, that is not terribly crowded and usually well controlled in terms of traffic lights and speed limits. It runs from about North Bergen, or perhaps farther North, southward along the Hudson River through Guttenberg, West New York, Hoboken, Jersey City, and some other towns in between. It is beautifully scenic no matter what time of day, and certainly more relaxed than other streets in the Jersey City area (read: much less honking).

Jersey City, NJ Driving Tips
Seriously watch out for the potholes. Some are really bad - but when you swing out around them make sure you look so that a jerk does not try to pass you at the same time. Also watch out for people who just roll throughout the stop signs in this city, that is pretty common, you actually have to slow down at the intersection even if you have the right of way.
Jersey City, NJ Buying Tips
Buying a car in Jersey City best thing to do is know what you want in advance and stick to your guns. Research cars online first before ever stepping foot on the lot, if you go in unsure of yourself you are open season for up-sell. You need a car that can take abuse if you are going to park on the street, I would never buy new in this town unless I had a garage. But when you do buy make sure you get all the details on the car history as you can.
Favorite driving memory
Most of my trips are short -- to and from the grocery store or mall. I actually avoid driving if at all possible because the potholes in the streets are horrific. Probably most memorable is the drive I took from my apartment to Target right after Sandy hit the area. We had been without electricity for two days when I looked out my apartment window, we are on the 18th floor so I can see pretty far, and I saw that the lights were on at Target. It was like a freaking beacon! Lucky enough my car is in a garage, I had moved it up to the top floor and an inside spot to avoid any damage, so I was able to get to it. Also we are high ground so no problem there. Anyway checked with police that live in the building and they said the streets from my apartment building and the store were open so off I went. Needless to say what I saw along the way was freaky. Not many cars out yet as many were flooded but still enough to call it traffic, especially since traffic lights on our part of the grid were still out. Made it to Jersey City side of the railroad tracks and to Target a-ok, except for being chewed out by my sister who told me it was too dangerous. Potholes were twice as big so it was like driving in the woods. Everyone drove slow and it was the most courteous driving I have ever experienced in the area.
Favorite road
Marin Blvd.. Only my favorite because it is the straightest shot to shopping. Nothing really spectacular except the pot holes, you could lose the front end of your car in them. It is also a bit of a challenge in that you need to be a mind reader to know if it safe to make the left turn onto Marin Boulevard from Observer Highway. That intersection is a bit of a free for all including dodging pedestrians. Anyway it is my favorite as it gets me where I want to get the fastest.
