The RAV4 is probably my favorite vehicle I've owned. It drives great, does wonderfully in snow/ice, and has gotten me through many situations where I really needed the 4WD. I never miss a day of snowboarding because of the weather. In the summer I use it just about every week to go to some off road trailhead and it always has plenty of space for my passengers, our gear, and my dog. I have driven it for road trips and its comfortable for long rides. The roof rack is perfect for mounting a ski rack to so you can save space in the vehicle. I also really like the storage container in the trunk to store camp chairs and things like that in case you are at a picnic or something and need a place to sit. The back door can be hard to close because of its weight, especially if you're parked on ... (more)
Story
I drove the RAV4 to a very remote location on the Chama River in New Mexico. The road to get there was very daunting but the RAV4 did it without any hassle. I found an elk skull while by the river which barely fit in the car but was able to get it home. It now hangs on my wall.
Pros
The 4WD and fairly high clearance are great. The storage and ability to configure the back seats is also wonderful. Plenty of space for passengers and gear.
Cons
The back door can be hard to close because of its weight, especially if you're parked on a hill. Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to turn off the honking sounds when you unlock or lock the vehicle with the key FOB. It can be a bit difficult to get in all the nooks and crannies in the back seat to clean hair or whatever.

I bought my 2009 RAV4 used about two years ago. I've definitely put it through its paces in that time, from long road trips to off roading adventures. I love my RAV4 so far. It drives well, has space for gear or people, and the AWD has saved me multiple times. I ski/snowboard in the winter and since getting the RAV4 with AWD I've never had a problem getting to the ski basin even on super snowy days. I've also taken it off roading once or twice. Now, I'm not saying the RAV4 is ready for mud bogging or anything, but I have never had to turn around or stop before reaching a trailhead.
Story
Driving through the snow one particularly snowy day to get to the ski basin. Passing people that couldn't make it up the hill the whole time.
Pros
Works great to get you where you want to go, no matter the conditions. It also provides plenty of storage space for hiking gear and your dog.
Cons
The door at the back of the vehicle is very squeaky.
