I've been driving my Chevy Aveo for six years now. I bought it used and it has never failed to start and run. Twice a month, or more often, I drive 150 miles round trip to take my husband to his dialysis clinic visits. This car has made many an emergency run in the middle of the night. Here in New Mexico, these small engines often have problems with sensors because of the dust, but we've never had that trouble with the Aveo. We get from 30 to 40 mpg. The only problems we have ever had with her were as a result of getting bad gas, and a dishonest mechanic who took her to do an oil change and returned her with an oil leak, which I think was supposed to make us rush back and give him $300 or so to fix it. Despite the oil leak we have continued to drive her on the highways and put a... (more)
Story
What I remember most isn't really fun - I remember more than one cold, dark night when my husband was sick and I had to rush him 70 miles to the nearest hospital where they can accomodate his dialysis needs. She always started, and she always got us there.
Pros
I love this Aveo most because she has been so reliable and dependable. We have put a lot of miles on her, and she always starts right up, runs, and gets us safely to our destination. She has never broken down on the highway or anywhere else. Outside of regular maintenance and a couple of small problems she hasn't been to a mechanic since we got her - in fact, as mentioned before, the mechanic did more harm than good. She gets fantastic gas mileage. She is quite comfortable and also has enough space to easily accommodate groceries, laundry and so on.
Cons
She has had some minor physical issues. Both window cranks have fallen off and had to be put back on. Chevy has sent us one recall notice and it took a year for the part to arrive at the local dealer - whose mechanic I do not trust and will not go to. I don't know if we can have that transferred to another dealer or not, but we will try to. There is some problem all the small Chevy's have with the rear lights shorting out. We have had that fixed like six times and it just shorts out again in a day or two.

I liked the styling of the Aveo as it was similar to another car I liked a great deal - that I later discovered had terrible mileage. In contrast, I've always been more than happy with the mileage the Aveo gets. Most importantly to me the vehicle has been extremely dependable and has required minimal maintenance even though we have put a considerable number of miles on it. My husband has a medical condition that requires us to make a 150 mile round trip twice a month to see his specialist for treatment. Of course, it is very important to me, also, that the little car never let me down when I need it. It has made one 70+ mile trip to the hospital at 80-90 mph without a hitch. This Chevy Aveo is truly a life saver for us.
Pros
Most important to me is that the car has been so reliable. It has required very little in the way of maintenance. I take it in once a year for oil change and a general checkup and nothing major has ever been wrong with it. It gets approximately 40 miles per gallon in mixed highway and city driving. The hatch in the rear and the fact that the back seats lay down allow the car to carry a surprising amount of cargo - I have even used it to transport my kayak and mountain bike!
Cons
There seems to be some sort of ongoing electrical problem with the small Chevy's as this Aveo is the second small Chevy I've had that has ongoing minor issues with the same tail light constantly going out and lately it has developed a problem with the fuse that goes to the windshield wipers constantly going out. That said, it is fairly easy and inexpensive to replace the fuses or tail light.
