The price I paid for my Ford Focus (2005) was very reasonable for the quality of the car. I have had my Focus for almost 100,000 miles at this point and it has NEVER broken down on me. Not once. In the several years and many miles I have had it, it has not required any major work outside of normal maintenance (Such as brake jobs, new tires, oil changes, and a new battery). It is quite powerful in its acceleration, for a 4 cylinder engine. I live in a fairly mountainous area and it handles steep roads easily and accelerates strongly. I have driven it across country three times, as well as numerous shorter road trips, and what I love the best is that I feel completely safe taking it anywhere, whether it is 10 miles or 2000 miles away.
Story
As I mentioned, I have taken my car on numerous road trips. I have so many memories in it that it would be hard to pinpoint just one. I think me and my daughter's cross country trips are the best. I've sang a million songs in it, cried in it, laughed in it, slept in it, had memorable conversations in it. It's almost like a family member or trusted friend at this point.
Pros
The power it has for a 4 cylinder engine continues to impress me, even as it is getting over 100,000 miles and starting to age. The lack of a need for any major repairs is a huge plus. It has never had any significant or costly malfunction in any of the major systems that matter most to me (drive train, suspension, engine, exhaust, none of that has malfunctioned in any way). It is definitely aging well for an older vehicle, and was built solidly. It does have a few flaws that have arisen, but the fact that none of them are significant and/or expensive thrills me to no end. It is a great ca... (more)
Cons
A few flaws...The air conditioning went out around 90,000 miles. No one has been able to identify exactly what is wrong with it. This is not a huge deal to me, since I do not live in an area with extreme heat or humidity. However, that might be a real problem for someone in a different climate. The door locks have had some issues, they are automatic and about six months ago they started having some glitches of getting stuck when trying to unlock without unlocking them manually. It does seem to wear out tires very slightly faster than the average vehicle, but this is not a significant diffe... (more)

This car was purchased for economy and gas mileage. I was not interested very much in the style. It was reasonably comfortable in the front but tight in the back seat. Unfortunately, it was the first model year and there were many problems. It became quickly clear that important structural parts such as bearings (we went through 3 within a year) and tire studs (one twisted and broke with hand turning) were not made robust enough and overall we experienced 17 separate recalls on ours. At one point, when the engine light went on, the dealership kept the car some ten weeks during which we put 8,000 miles on a loaner car.
Story
Not really. Although, despite the closeness to the ground, we were able to visit some state and national parks whose roads were pretty rough and it held up pretty well for that stuff.
Pros
It got pretty good mileage on the highway. It handled okay although it was difficult to see out the mirrors. It braked okay and the brakes lasted a reasonable amount of time. After several years, the car seemed to become more reliable and we had less trouble with it as it got older. The car is still on the road, but just barely.
Cons
This car had 17 recalls. It was not roomy, and it seemed that the trunk was oddly shaped so that no matter what you tried to put in it you had a heck of a time fitting it. The back seats had no leg room and had to be folded down from inside the truck. The car was very noisy and before too long the dashboard seemed to develop a new rattle every day. Small parts all over broke easily just through regular use, such as the clip that holds the hood latch pull, fuse holders, and such. And of course, the legendary Ford safety belts that seems to always get stuck in the car door or trapped where y... (more)

This is a dealership selling Hertz rental cars after they are taken out of the fleet. You know that the cars are in generally good condition, having been taken care of, the cars are relatively new (1-2 years old) and that the average mileage is around 30,000. The salesmen were actually great. The one I went on a test drive with was a guy who sang Queensryche songs at karaoke bars! They were patient, helpful, courteous, not pushy or overbearing, and the salesman gave me some vital information about the car I selected, which I wish I had paid more attention to. Good experience all around.

They have very knowledgeable people on staff to answer any questions, and while they're still in business to sell cars, they make the process easy. They also finance thru local credit unions, which makes that part smooth, and you feel confident you're getting a good deal on the financing as well
