My Malibu has been a great vehicle for over seven years now (I bought it in 2009). It gets great gas mileage, which was one of my biggest needs at the time. There were a couple of extras that came along with this model that I didn't need, but I'm glad they were included. Now that I live on my own, I can't explain how many times I have needed to fold the back seats down and fit something that's 8'-10' long in my trunk. I've taken that thing on countless trips to Cedar Point, Chicago, Milwaukee and never been concerned about it. It seems like the perfect mix between a nice vehicle, but not a luxury one (which isn't something I need). Also, the remote start in the winters has been a life saver.
Story
I met my wife while driving that car!!!
Pros
This car gets great gas mileage (32ish miles on the highway). It's been fairly dependable for me, with normal wear and tear that you would expect on a vehicle that is getting to be over 10 years old. For a two wheel drive car, it handles the snow and ice pretty well in the winter. Super easy for me to do small maintenance tasks such has light bulb replacement and air filter changes.
Cons
I like the black color, but it seems to get dirty very easily and show when it is. Also, I have a couple scratches along the side, and they are very obvious with a color as dark as black. I have had some steering/suspension issues with it which weren't cheap, but they also didn't break the bank and I would expect normal wear and tear on it. The CD player also broke fairly early into me owning it, and I have never gotten it fixed. There has been an assortment of recalls that have been issued for the car over the last six years. No cost to me, but can be concerning if the parts are malfuncti... (more)

2004 Chevrolet Malibu - Reliable and economical commuter vehicle

The Malibu is a reliable vehicle for a great price. I use it every day for a 1.5 Hour commute, and have yet to experience any issues. It is cheap on gas, offers a comfortable ride, and is the perfect choice if you need an economical car that can comfortably fit 5 people. While it isn't the fastest car around, it takes me from point A to point B without worries. The no-frills stereo doesn't offer much in the way of features, but will keep you rocking as you make your day-to-day drive. You'll feel good about the decision as you drive away from the pump with money left in your pocket. While certainly not the most attractive ride, the Malibu isn't too hard on the eyes, and makes up for it with economy and reliability.
Story
My family will often pile into this car and drive out for ice cream. Before the purchase, we didn't realize how popular the Malibu was, but now that I own one the kids spot them everywhere. It makes you appreciate how popular this vehicle is.
Pros
The electronic power steering is a relief if you're tired of replacing pumps and seals. Both highway and city gas mileage are excellent. If you upgrade to the 6 cylinder, you'll only spend slightly more on gas, and have plenty of pep for merging onto the highway or passing another vehicle. The ride is quiet, and the look is tasteful and classy. This is definitely a great car for business trips or a night on the town. Four wheel disc brakes make for easy replacement of pads.
Cons
The CD player tends to eat CDs. You insert them, play them, and pray that they will eject. (They often don't.) This is a known issue with the Malibu; many complaints can be found on forums. Power is lacking in the 4 cylinder engine, making it difficult to pass or merge onto the highway. The brakes lack grip, but with such a small engine you probably won't be driving too fast anyway. The trim looks a bit dated. There are a few recalls related to power steering and lights.

The car is still running strong with no major problems. The transmission is as strong as new. I like the fact that it gets 30 to 35 miles per gallon. I also enjoy having air conditioner that works quite good. As the years have gone by I am disappointed in having recalls, however at least the parts were still available. Although it's going on 10 years ago, it is now starting to show rust spots. I know my interior has been washed and cleaned many times and the fact that the fabric has not torn or worn is a major plus. The car is very good at traveling hills and rough gravel roads. They claim that the newer models are better, however I disagree. This car sits higher on the tires than new ones and that's a plus. The entrance into it allows you to get in , sit, and not feel like you're sitt... (more)
Pros
Pros are the miles per gallon, the higher sitting off the ground & the back seats fold down. My favorite features are the air conditioner and the very well made interior fabric.
Cons
The cons are the recalls and the back seats don't fold down flat enough.
