2001 BMW 7 Series - Nice but not practical

My BMW is the first luxury car I have owned and came with many accessories not found in a standard car. I was impressed with the digital dashboard, which shows most of the functions when in use. I also like, the windshield wipers that have an automatic sensor which adjusts faster/slower according to the amount of rain, as needed. Overall, the BMW is a smooth running vehicle and fully surprised me since this is a German made car. However, the replacement parts for the car are pricey and should be considered before purchase, as this can be an ongoing expense.
Historia
I just had the car for about a week and went to show it off to a good friend, but when she tried to get into the passenger side of the car, we couldn't figure out how to unlock the doors, which you can not pull on manually. Some guy passing by stopped and showed me where the door lock button was, which was right in front of me. We had a good laugh
A Favor
My BMW is very roomy and the seats, steering wheel, windows and locks are all electric and easily accessible. While backing up a sensor sounds off in the car warning I am close to an object. The car also comes with a built-in automatic and manual transmission option to use during various driving conditions. The passenger door mirror moves downwards automatically when the car is put into reverse, and moves back to the original position when put into any other gear.
En Contra
There is a price to pay for luxury, regular maintenance is very expensive for the BMW. And, any parts needed are more expensive than the average vehicle. I still have not learned what some of the accessories are because there are so many included, too high tech for me I guess. Can overheat easily if not properly bled every time you add coolant, which is not something I have ever had to do with any other car in the past. Also, the resale value is not much compared to the price when the car was purchased,

2005 BMW 7 Series - Overall, very good.

My vehicle is a very nice vehicle. The leather seating is immaculate. The features are outstanding. The pick up is wonderful; when you press the gas, the car responds magnificently. The only qualm that I have with this car is the amount of repairs that I have encountered. With it being a BMW, the repairs are NOT cheap.
Historia
I've taken this vehicle on many road trips over the years. I always valet park when I go anywhere. We've been asked many times what NFL team my husband plays for due to his size and, I guess, because of the particular vehicle.
A Favor
Very soft and comfortable leather. Roomy interior for a car. Lot's of automatic features available at the touch of a button. Nice, quiet drive. Lot's of horsepower.
En Contra
Once these vehicles are out of warranty, the repairs are extremely expensive. When BMW first redesigned this 7 series BMW, the ZF transmission was a new concept for them. It had lot's of problems that kept reoccurring over time. Some issues were computer related, others were not. The car also has lot's of different sensors. If one sensor malfunctioned, it would cause the entire car to shut down. Also, finding a mechanic that is certified to work on the vehicles can be a challenge.

I was a little nervous about getting a BMW 7 series because I had always had Mercedes Benz cars, and they clearly have an interior workmanship advantage in terms of wear and tear. Nonetheless, I took a chance buying an older BMW 7 series and was pleasantly surprised by the performance, fuel economy, and handling. Overall, I was very pleased.
Historia
I was at a stoplight and the bushing problem started up... The car started shaking a lot. The person behind me caught my eyes in the rear-view mirror...They mouthed the words 'bomb', and then drove off as fast as possible...I thought... nope, just a faulty bushing.
A Favor
The 7 Series from 1995 is built to go around 190-200 mph with a factory engine. I only tested it up to 140 mph on a private highway, but I was impressed that my foot was only two-thirds of the way to the floor. I also routinely got around 24 mpg on the highway at normal speeds, which is pretty good for a V8 engine. The leather seats were much more comfortable than I expected.
En Contra
BMW has had a bushing problem and this vehicle was no different. I used to have a large shimmy in the car when I sat at a stoplight and when I was going between 55 and 66 mph. Replacing the bushing is the obvious answer. Another problem that I had was with the automatic transmission. There is a capability of changing your drive style to a different mode depending upon the road conditions. A flaw in the system meant that if I was at a stop and idling for 30 minutes (traffic) or more and then sped up, the car would shift automatically up to about 55mph. At that point it would decide t... (more)
