I bought this car in 2007. I was looking for a smaller SUV to be gentler on gas consumption, but I was shown this vehicle and offered a "great" price that I couldn't turn down. I worked as a contractor and was happy to have the extra room. I could carry a 4x8 sheet flat on the rear deck with the rear gate closed. It was definitely hard on gas, but I only drove around town and watched for deals on gas. It was harder to park than the smaller car would have been. It was actually quite reliable. The only problem I had was a failed transmission in the winter snow. That was an expensive fix, and I was always wary after that. It was roomy and comfortable, and I enjoyed driving it. It was four-wheel drive so I was not stuck at home in snowy conditions. I became the neighborhood savior when peo... (more)

Carried bikes inside the car to a local forest preserve and could stay overnight with the bikes safe in the car.

En Contra
Expensive to run and hard to find parking.

My wife and I purchased our Ford Explorer new from the local dealership after test driving multiple vehicles from different makers. We were impressed with how quiet the Explorer is going down the road. I have found that it has more than enough room for long car trips that my family frequently takes. We can easily fit four large suitcases in the trunk if the third row has been folded down. We chose the limited trim for the heated and cooled seats. The cooled seats make long trips easier, and you do not get as hot sitting in the seat for a long period of time. The Sync system is good for navigation and normal use. The large screen is easy to manipulate while driving with minimal distraction. For a four-wheel drive SUV, we get around 23 MPG which for a four-wheel drive, I am completely ha... (more)

We love to go watch fireworks at a local park each year. Everybody parks in the grass, and a few years ago, it had just rained and everything was soaked. There was still a little rain falling. We decided rather than sit in the seats, we wanted to enjoy the fireworks, so we opened the rear hatch and sat in the back and watched the fireworks from there.
A Favor
Comfort. The Explorer is one of the most comfortable vehicles I have ever driven. Layout. The layout of the interior is intuitive, and everything is easy to find and use while traveling down the road. Third row. The third row seating is great when there is that one or two extra persons that you need to transport.
En Contra
The only con about this Explorer is that there is no digital function for speed. With all the LCD displays for everything going on, it does not have a speedometer that is digital.

This car drives well and is very comfortable. The model I have has a lot of very nice features. The heated, leather seats are very comfortable. The touchscreen for the music and navigation is easy to use and has a great screen. I had some trouble with the hood of this car, and the paint was peeling for no reason. Ford took care of the issue and installed a new hood, which was a perfect resolution. However, I am disappointed in how they have designed the back seats. It is not practical to have to pull a seat down when you have several children in car seats.
Historia
I was able to use this car to pickup a bedroom set for my kids. Being able to put the car seats down in order to fit large items in this vehicle really comes in handy quite often for my family.
A Favor
The model I have has leather seats, which are very comfortable. They are heated and adjustable. It is a very smooth drive and has some good pickup and go. The four-wheel drive works very well and makes for a confident drive in the worst of weather which is necessary in my Chicago weather. The parking sensors are very helpful. The back-up camera has great quality and works very well.
En Contra
The accessibility in the back for car seats is not practical for a family with young children in car seats. To not be able to get to the third row without popping down the seat behind the passenger's seat does not work out very well for me at all. It is a very expensive vehicle for what you get out of it.

I looked all over Chicago and suburbs for a used Ford E350 cargo van, but to no avail. I also checked all the local newspaper classified ads, but couldn't find one for sale. Apparently, people buy these vans, and keep them. They're a real workhorse. Anyway, I found out Carmax in Schaumburg had one for sale, so I went there. Originally, it was listed at $13,000, but I managed to talk them down to $9,200. They even threw in an after-market cruise control - at half price!

They offered a good deal on the car. They were not pushy. At no time did I feel pressured into buying the car. They let me take my time with my decision. They were more than willing to let me check out a bunch of their cars. They were forthright about the different cars' histories and what not. They gave me their good assessment as to which car is more reliable than others.
