Buckle up and make peace with whatever higher power you believe in when things get real. Tell your family you love them before you go. Anything can happen down here at any time, for any reason. If you don't think that person is really going to change six lanes in a last-ditch effort to exit the interstate, think again.
This city is rife with car dealers just looking to make a quick buck with something they bought from a police/bank auction and fixed up really quick. There are some amazing deals to be had out here with all the luxury automobiles people buy and can't afford but they are scattered among plenty of lemons. Know what you are looking for, do your research on the vehicle history, know what you want to pay, and you will have success!
Fort Lauderdale is a prime example of South Florida driving, where people from all different driving backgrounds converge on a single road system! Constant vigilance is key here as traffic lights are really just suggestions and emergency vehicles do not have the right-of-way! It is hard to pick a single favorite memory out of the many terrifying experiences... The woman driving the wrong way down the on-ramp, the semi truck that merged into me and two other cars, the lady next to me who got rear-ended at a red light and spilled her milkshake all over the inside of her windshield. Oh and if you get motion sickness from roller coasters definitely don't take a taxi here! Just step behind the wheel of any car and hold on for the ride of your life!
NE 7th Ave. This is the best road to get around the traffic caused by the Fort Lauderdale International Airport. Nobody ever uses it and the road provides an ample amount of wildlife. Tall trees shade the road and if you are lucky you will see many different escaped convicts from the zoo and surrounding area including many exotic birds and monkeys! It is a little slower and has a few potholes but it is lovely and a great alternative to US-1 at rush hour.

I would warn everyone to pay attention and never be distracted while driving on I-95. It is the worse. Pretty much all the other drivers don't know how to drive. I have had had very many close calls on that highway. It's very scary and I'm always tense the entire time I have to drive it.
There are tons of car lots here. New, used, dealerships, non dealerships. We also have auctions and of course Craigslist. You need to be thorough and do your research when buying a car here. There are a lot of non dealership lots and some can be scams. Just make sure you know all your options, research everything, and then research everything again.
My favorite memory of driving in Fort Lauderdale is when I just drove around aimlessly for the first time. I had just bought my first car and was getting to know it and the city as a driver for the first time. It was fun trying to figure out which routes were the best and which roads went where and how far they went. It was also fun to take the routes that my family used to and explore old neighborhoods as a driver and a new adult. It was a different experience compared to being a passenger. I actually had to pay attention to my surroundings so I got to notice a lot of different things.
Federal Highway. I like this road because it's so long. Either way you go you can drive for hours if you want. It also has a pretty good speed limit that doesn't change much. It's very relaxing for me to drive this road, since I know it so well and it's straight and the speed limit doesn't change, I can just coast along.
