The GMC Canyon (near-identical twin to Chevrolet Colorado) is just what you need if you're looking for a pickup to actually do work, not just look cool while you take your groceries home. It doesn't have the power of capacity of a full-size pickup, but it doesn't cost as much to buy or operate, either. Fit and finish are good, and the inline 5 has plenty of power.
Historia
When I hacked and slashed about 4 years of runaway growth in the shrubs and vines of our landscaping, I loaded the Canyon so high with branches and leaves that you could hardly see the truck. As I slowly crept down the driveway to dump it at the bottom of our lot, a neighbor yelled "I can't see the mule! You overloaded that wagon!"
A Favor
After driving a full size Silverado for 10 years, the Canyon felt a lot more maneuverable but was still big enough to haul what I needed. The bed is a little over 4 feet wide, so sheets of plywood or MDF fit just fine (but you'll want to put something between the wheel wells to support the middle of the sheet). The extended cab is just right for dogs, bags of groceries, even smallish people for short runs if you slide the seats forward. The automatic transmission is smooth and tight, and you can shift into and out of high-range 4WD on the move.
En Contra
Because I was looking for just what the Canyon offered, I don't have many complaints. It isn't super comfortable on long trips (no proper arm rest, for example), but I have driven a hair over 800 miles in one (long) day and survived. The most common complaint we've had is no outside temperature readout (picky, picky).

I had never had a truck in my life and really wanted to get one, but didn't want one that would be so big that I would hate the gas mileage. I settled on this as it was on the smaller side but enough to pack my gear in. Just a bad product though. Engine had continual timing belt issues, breaks would grind and the trim pieces would pop up. To top it all off, electrical issues of course. Would never get a GMC product again.
Historia
I took this camping many times and had fun with it, but my windows wouldn't roll up one night and it started raining. Frustrating!
A Favor
Good price. Decent gas mileage for a truck. Good speakers.
En Contra
Poor engine mechanics. Trim pieces very cheap and plastic. Electrical issues with doors and windows.
