The Ford Explorer is one of the most versatile vehicles on the road. It performs well in 4x4 conditions and can take you anywhere from the ski resort to a snowy backcountry trailhead. The Explorer is narrower than most SUVs, making it easier to drive and park in the city as well. In 1999, the Explorer was rated for 18mpg city and 23mpg highway; this is impressive given the age of the vehicle.
Story
One of the most fun things I've done with my Explorer was going on a road trip in California. I made a bed in the back and essentially turned the rig into an RV, camping out in parking lots as I travelled.
Pros
The Explorer has plenty of cargo space. The length of the cargo area makes it is easy to lie down and sleep in the back. I am just under 6 feet tall and I fit with no issues. The automatic 4x4 makes driving backroads safer, as it will kick in as soon as the wheels start to slip. Routine maintenance such as oil changes and brake replacement is easy with an Explorer; being an older vehicle, the systems are not complicated enough to be confusing!
Cons
As the Explorer ages, rattles become worse and worse. It's not the highest quality vehicle on the road. With routine maintenance, it's possible to keep the ride smooth, but it will not be a Cadillac. Mechanical issues become more common around 130,000+ miles.

This rare V8 Ford Explorer from 1996 is one of the few vehicles that I've used in my mail route that can actually get me through deep snow (great wheel clearance, all-wheel drive). I'm kind of glad that my six-cylinder Chevy Astrovan blew it's engine just before winter, so that I was forced to switch to my Ford (which I was hoping to NOT use for work because of it's low mileage).
Story
I was the ONLY mail carrier in Whatcom County, Washington who delivered every box on my route this winter! (The boxes the idiot snow plow didn't knock down, that is!)
Pros
Good transmission gear ratio (in low gear, takes you through amazingly deep snow, horrible places. Just go easy on the gas!). Great wheel well and vehicle clearance keeps you above the snow, mud, and rocks! Even when these Fords begin to wear out, they always really like to run. They seem to run rich, but at least I've NEVER had one stall.
Cons
Sticky door locks (fill with dirt and jam. Need to use spit on the key, and then use a rapid jiggling motion ton open doors). LOUSY Gas mileage (both the six and eight-cylinder models only get about ten mpg when used for stop-and-go delivery or driving!).

Low price, and an honest explanation of why the vehicle was for sale on a "wrecker lot".

Anyways, the employee and I browsed around and I told him the cars I was interested in and we got to test driving. He was very down to earth and easy to be around. I definitely did not feel pressured. I told him I was going to meet up with a friend afterwards who was also selling his car and that because of the better deal it was very possible I would get that car instead. The employee was understanding of this and although I left my phone number and address he didn't harass me after that day. I really appreciated that because sometimes I get turned off by dealerships who do that and I don't bother test driving.
