I purchased the truck to be able to haul construction equipment and materials over long distances. Since I own a small construction company, I have to travel to different job sites. Some of these locations are in different states. Regardless, over the last few years, it has proven to be a very dependable truck. The 2014 Ram is capable of handling well with a heavy load, rough terrain, and in any weather. Additionally, it is a very comfortable truck to drive and has lots of leg room. I am able to drive between states with minimal to no fatigue. It was even capable of handling the steep incline and descent through the Appalachian mountains. Without the right vehicle, it would be difficult to haul any load up the mountain. However, the 1500 is able to handle perfectly. Another benefit to ... (more)
Story
My wife and I will regularly take trips down to Florida from Tennessee. It can be a long trip, but with the right vehicle, it's definitely easier. We always used to take her Honda Element, and it wasn't comfortable. We started taking my Ram and have never stopped.
Pros
Towing capability, maneuverability, size, comfort
Cons
There isn't an off switch for the headlights, just an "auto" mode. The truck senses when its dark. If this fails, the lights will stay on all night and burn out the battery. Its an easy fix though.

When I purchased the truck, I also purchased an extended warranty. Of course, I thought that this would also extend the drive train. Much to my dismay, after 120,000 miles when the transmission started experiencing trouble, I found out that the drive train warranty was for 100,000 miles and was not included in the extended warranty. This transmission should not have started having trouble at 120,000 miles.
Story
My grandson is in a car seat, which is almost impossible to mount in these back seats. As soon as he moved to a booster, the first thing he wanted to do was ride in PaPa's truck. He talked all the way down the road and was so excited. This is a priceless moment.
Pros
It has all the features you could ask for in a vehicle. On board navigation, automatic wipers and headlights. It is very comfortable to ride, and it tows my trailer very well. It is a smooth ride for a truck and has good power.
Cons
Maintenance. It seems like I have had way too many maintenance issues. I have a taillight that is constantly out. I take it to the dealership, they do whatever and it is working. A few weeks to a month later it is out. The cruise control also only works when it wants to. I drive a lot of miles and a lot of long trips, it is very inconvenient not to have this standard capability. Then, of course, there is the transmission issue I spoke about. The rear seats are so uncomfortable they are not worth having. Also, they are almost impossible to mount a car seat because the backs are so straight.

2014 Dodge Ram 1500 ReportCard Review

Autolist ReportCard Score: 97/100

Pros:

  • Only turbo diesel engine in its class
  • Comfortable interior with a lot of storage areas
  • Composed and smooth ride
  • Excellent gas mileage and towing capacity

Cons:

  • Upper trim levels can get pricey
  • Style may prove too much for conservative truck buyers
  • Seasoned pickup truck drivers might be thrown off by the rotary shift knob
  • Awkward 8-speed rotary gear selector

Review Summary:

The 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 gets excellent gas mileage and has the only turbo engine in its class.

The ride of the Ram 1500 is exceptionally smooth; however, the 8-speed rotary gear selector is awkward and seasoned pickup truck drivers may be thrown off by the rotary feature.

While the upper trim levels can get a bit pricey than desired, there is a comfortable interior and plenty of storage areas to secure personal items and gear.

The style of the Ram 1500 may be too much for buyers who are typically more conservative, but the towing capacity is excellent.
