For the full spectrum of Midwest weather, the Subaru Forester is an excellent choice. This is the first all wheel drive vehicle I've owned, and I always thought that wouldn't make much of a difference. Boy, was I wrong! I can comfortably and confidently drive in the snow and ice of a Chicago winter in my Forester. It's also a ton of fun in the summer with the massive sunroof that I have in my model! My husband and I have also taken our Forester into the mountains and it really hugs those tight hairpin turns and made us feel safe. It has a smooth, relatively quiet ride and sits nice and high above the street, so I never have to worry about something hitting the bottom of my car.
Story
Driving through the Smoky Mountains in the Forester was an awesome experience and we were able to enjoy the views so much more knowing that our vehicle could handle the terrain.
Pros
The Subaru safety is something we love. Also, the space in the trunk is excellent. When you fold down the rear seats, you have an amazing amount of hauling space. My husband and I have moved with it and we've brought both of our bikes in the back. We often go on weekend road trips where we each pack bags and we also bring our two dogs with us, so there is plenty of room for that. Also, the Forester is really a peppy ride - very quick for a 4 cylinder. I really like the styling as well. It definitely has a sportier feel than a minivan or than many SUVs.
Cons
The brakes can be a bit soft, so I find that it's necessary to push down pretty hard and pretty far to get the response I want. Also, when slowing down from a high speed, sometimes my steering wheel shakes from side to side and I'm not sure why.

1998 Subaru Forester - Great speedy, reliable car.

I love my 1998 Subaru Forester Turbo. It has great handling, a lot of speed, and a lot of power. It gets pretty good city and highway gas mileage, which really surprised me for an all-wheel drive car. One of the best things about it is that it's easy to find parts for it and not too difficult to fix minor mechanical issues myself. It's a great road trip car and has enough room for friends and family. It also has a lot of storage space, and it's very easy to set up roof rack accessories to carry bikes, luggage, snowboards, etc. I think one of the cons of my car is that I do not have leather upholstery. I really prefer to have leather as opposed to cloth seats because they are easier to care for, and I think they wear better if they are conditioned properly. Also, the stock stereo and sp... (more)
Story
I did a hot springs road trip where I used the car to drive around to different out-of-the-way hot springs. We car camped, off-roaded a bit, and had a really great time.
Pros
Speed, power, all-wheel drive, and reliability.
Cons
Sound system (speaker and audio deck) and cloth upholstery.

The salesman knew me from a previous sale and he helped me just as much the second time around as he did the first time. The dealership is very helpful when it comes to service. It's always fast and performed very well. There wasn't any pressure during the sales process, which I appreciated very much. Other dealerships have tried to apply pressure and typical sales tactics because I am a female. But since I am a gearhead and a former sales person myself, I see through it. Gerald has never been like that with me, so I keep returning to them.

NOTE: My car is a 2015, but the dropdown only goes to 2014. They had a Forester for sale -- not all Subaru dealers did. The salesman responded quickly to my on-line query about pricing. I was quoted the Internet price. I went down to the dealership the next day and bought to car with no haggling. The salesman was very friendly, as was the sales manager.
