Toyota Camry Hybrid Owner Ratings & Reviews

2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid -
Went from a Tahoe to a Camry Hybrid during a particularly high spike in fuel prices — it's been very reliable in terms of MPG over the years. It truly depends on the driving (city, highway, rapid acceleration, etc.), but I average about 30MPG. At the time of purchase, hybrids were just starting to gain momentum so this was fabulous and still is. For the first four years of its life, I drove the heck out of my poor car, and it stood up to constant driving, various terrain, many 1,000+ trips and regular 300+ trips. The only time I've ever found myself broke down on the side of the road is the one time I ran out of gas. To me, this signals excellent reliability and peace of mind for a family car.
Story
Took a 1,500 mile road trip with my son to find a new place to live. It was a great memory, because it was the beginning of our new life.
Pros
With regular maintenance, the car has been very reliable. Regular oil changes and I'm ten years into the ownership, and I've still not had any major problems. Ten years later, the navigation system (and related information) is still useful and relevant. Great gas mileage. Quality leather seating and no cracks at all.
Cons
I seem to go through brake pads quicker than with any other car I've had. Quite a few recalls during the first couple of years. Almost from the beginning I've had a slight 'whistle' type sound from the top of the driver's window.
2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid - Too many widgets
This car has too many electronic functions. So there are too many things that can go wrong with the vehicle. It beeps at you constantly. Sometimes it is hard to know that the car is on because it runs idle using the electric motor. This has resulted in leaving the car on in the garage for hours by mistake. Also, the electric car battery packs fail around 150,000 miles. That is a very expensive repair.
Story
We had this car while our wife was nursing our daughter. It was quite a nice car for sitting and nursing, because it would be powered from electricity. One time we were in downtown and someone had pulled up to get our spot. I exclaimed to the other motorist that we were beginning a nursing session and would be awhile. He smiled and passed on.
Pros
When it's running well, it runs well. It's a generally easy to drive car. It's fast and has a variable transmission, which is quite smooth.
Cons
Too many electronic widgets. It also doesn't get as good gas mileage as it should.
