It's not the fastest, and actually it's pretty gutless. But I guess I knew it would be gutless--I wanted a truck that would get decent gas mileage, so I went looking for a 4-cylinder. The manual transmission is what gets me up hills. I can't imagine what it's like in an automatic! But it runs great, it's SO inexpensive to fix and maintain, it's not not-fun to drive, and it is so convenient, having a truck.
Story
I don't dread moving. I can buy furniture on a whim! The drive-in theater is SO FUN. Car camping is a breeze--just throw some blankets and pillows back there, and poof! You've got a bed with a view.
Pros
The price for a reliable vehicle, the fact that it's a truck, the dependability of a Toyota.
Cons
It's slow, it's slow to accelerate, it huffs and puffs on hills, it doesn't handle well without a load in the back (which it rarely has), the gas mileage is only good for a truck--it's pretty terrible for a vehicle.

1996 Toyota Tacoma - It is the most reliable vehicle I ever owned and probably one of the most reliable ever made. It is well built and well engineered.

I first decided to buy this Toyota based on my need for a pickup and even more so, reliability. My employer had a couple of older Toyota pickups that had been through the ringer. These vehicles had been driven abusively by dozens of individuals over the years with nobody keeping up on maintenance and yet they still ran perfectly. The Tacoma was the current small pickup and I felt it was definitely more comfortable than past pickup models. It even had a sleeker and more aerodynamic look. I did not need a lot of room and so the size suited me well. It was still big enough for me to use on side work when needed. Also the gas mileage was great. I am not one to keep up well with maintenance and this is a perfect truck if you are the same. It will run without a lot of coddling though I reco... (more)
Story
Although some may consider the small size of this truck a detriment I have actually found it to be a positive on at least one occasion. I remember when I was working on a big job about 25 miles from my house. There were some newbies working there and they were of somewhat dubious character. A couple of them needed rides to work and they were not too far out of the way. They asked me and I show... (more)
Pros
- Reliable/Low Maintenance - Small size makes parking and handling easy - Fun to drive - Manual transmission - Easy to get parts in the unlikely event of maintenance issues - Just under 200,000 miles and still chugging along
