Overall, the 1995 VW Golf was a reliable car, and excellent in wet weather or snowy conditions. It was small, and not the most comfortable to drive. However, the driving experience was pretty great, and it was easy to fall for this little car. Despite it's compact size, this car was very good looking. Perhaps 'handsome' is a better description. All in all, I truly enjoyed every driving experience with the Golf. It was the maintenance and repairs that forced me to give it up.
Story
One winter, we got out of school early because of snowy/icy weather. As everyone was trying to leave, many of the other drivers were getting stuck on icy spots in the parking lot. My little Golf never had any trouble with icy roads, and I had a great time weaving in and out of all the other cars (and some trucks) that were getting stuck in the lot.
Pros
The Golf was fun to drive and got great gas mileage (and this was back when gas was under $1/ gallon. We are talking 30+ mpg anywhere. Despite it's smallish engine, it had a lot of get-up and go. This car practically hummed at 90 mph, but I rarely got a chance to push it that far. The 5-speed transmission was so much fun to drive. This car made me love manual transmissions.
Cons
While it was reliable, if you did have any mechanical issues, the cost of repairs was very high. Foreign cars are always more expensive to fix, and there were few choices for parts outside of buying new from the manufacturer. There were also many electrical issues with this car. The primary reason that I traded it is was because it was going to need over $1,000 in repairs to find and address those issues.
