I previously owned a 2000 VW GTI VR6 in futura yellow. I absolutely loved the color and often got many compliments on it as you just didn't see that color everyday. The interior had the best trim package, something that you would expect in a luxury car model but not an economy car. The leather seats held up for 10 years and were still in near perfect condition when I sold the car. The blue dashboard lighting was easy on the eyes for night driving--something I truly miss now that I have bright white dashboard lights. There was no interior noise and no rattles you get with other typical economy sports cars. The car was also exceptionally fun to drive. It handled very well in corners and turns. It rode smoothly with bumps hardly noticeable.
Story
Whenever another Futura yellow GTI would pass me on the interstate, they would flash their lights.
Pros
The construction--both interior and exterior--were high quality. The added touches such as the blue dashboard lights, leather seats, wood trim, heated seats, leather steering wheel all created a luxurious feel. Suspension was excellent. Cool that limited edition colors were offered.
Cons
Had to replace my max airflow sensor twice and oxygen sensors three times. Driver's side window fell out twice due to a poorly working window regulator that ended up being recalled.

2001 Volkswagen Golf GTI - Fun to drive but expensive to maintain

One of the things I liked about the car was that it was a smaller car (and living in and around NYC, is a godsend as far as parallel parking). It had a great interior with sturdy, quality materials from everything from the dashboard to the seating material (seating cushion never pilled/peeled apart, leather was durable and didn't crack over its 10+ year use). It had plenty of room to transport around large suitcases or people in the backseat (even if they were > 6 feet tall), and the trunk was pretty spacious. It was definitely a comfortable car and I rarely had any issues with my back, as I commuted ~1 hour to school most days while driving it. It was a pretty zippy car (as I have a heavy foot) and despite my heavy foot, it got great gas mileage and was cheap to fill up (~20+ or s... (more)
Story
One time I was on my way to school, and I must have the worst luck ever. A good portion of the time I opened my windows during the warm/hot months, I'd end up having some spider/cricket/other bugs hop or fly into my car (which obviously is a bit unsafe since I'm not a huge fan of things flying around in my car while driving). I had a bee fly in and crawl up the ceiling toward the driver side... (more)
Pros
The materials in the car and outside were good quality. I had a few instances where I accidentally bumped the exterior bumper and there weren't any scratches or dents, and had someone run into me in traffic with no damage. I felt safe in the car, as well as comfortable (good airbag placement and VW is known for its safety). I liked the look of the car and how fast it went from 0-60. I thought it was a lot of fun to drive, and the braking/handling were very good considering there were plenty of times I had to emergency brake on the highway due to someone in front of me not taking the ri... Cons
It was a little noisy on the highway, but on local roads it wasn't too noticeable if I had music/radio on. The car started needing repairs toward the last 2 years of its life before I donated it (due to the weatherproofing eroding on the door panels and the car started growing mold from water getting in); I had to repair the radiator and some of the sensors seemed to have been made of plastic, so they kept turning on regardless of if there actually was a problem with the car or not (so passing inspection was annoying. I'd have to keep getting the sensors reset). Repairing any issue with... (more)
