Loved it, hated it.
I loved having this car. It was an overwhelming beast. It had racing seats so it am was super comfortable. It was quick and exciting to drive. And a true representation of me in my youth. I bought it used. The owner before was not kind to it and I paid for it in the long run. I lost a lot of money trying to fix it. That's the one bummer about these cars. The $$$ for repairs. I'm a musician and with the fold down seats in the back, I had plenty of room for all my gear.

Performance at a discount.
The fourth generation Volkswagen GTI is not going to compete with modern race cars but with a quite torquey six cylinder naturally aspirated engine it will get you up and off the line quick. The GTI is no sloth. The Germans got it right with an advanced engine for it's time, fast 0 to 60 times, and a nice spotty hatchback appearance with a large aftermarket following. The car shifts well between it's six gears, another nice touch by Volkswagen, which puts the 200 horsepower tot he road quite well. The rear suspension is lackluster but handles decently. You'll find a single beam holding the two wheels together instead of independent rear suspension. The oil pan is aluminum and many have been easily cracked spewing oil all over the ground. The paint is decent and the interior nice with heated leather seats. It's also quite quirky with two mismatched interior door panels. The issues are mostly cosmetic aside from the oil pan, which can be replaced with a steel pan. The worst aspect is the engineering of the engine bay and front suspension. Most engine repairs require removing the entire front end to get at the huge engine stuffed into this tiny car. For the price of a decent early 2000 Honda you can't go wrong however.
