My last car was a salvage that was an unreliable road hazard. I knew I wanted my next car to be reliable AND affordable. After a bunch of research I found my grey hatchback Hyundai Accent. The mpg is nothing to write home about, between 28 and 37 mpg depending on where I'm driving, but it has needed only minimal upkeep in the almost two years/45K miles I have driven it so far. The tires are actually affordable! I needed some new tires desperately on a Saturday and where I live Walmart was the only option, and they had them in stock for $50 bucks a pop! Which is great considering the last subcompact I had needed special ordered $200 dollar tires. For the vehicle's size I have rarely been lacking for space. I'm so glad I found one of the few cars that doesn't seem to have a ton of issues... (more)
Story
I name my cars and this one is no different. This guy is named Joel. Me and Joel go pretty much everywhere together and now he has a girlfriend my dog Tess whom I went and rescued in him. We drove an hour and a half to meet her and she doesn't like it when I go off with "her man". Every time we go outside she has to visit him and check to make sure we don't leave without her.
Pros
Cheap Tires Decent Pickup Space No Recalls
Cons
One big drawback is how low this thing sits. I mean pulling out of some driveways I hear undercarriage shield scrape. When I purchased mine it did not come with a spare which is a personal pet peeve. But acquiring a rim and tire was easy and the spot is there in the trunk for a spare.

My 2016 Hyundai Accent is a cute little car that gets fantastic gas mileage. It has a 12.9 gallon tank, and I rarely put more than $20 in gas in her. I drive the six-speed manual transmission, and shifting feels smooth and responsive. It is a small car and super easy to park. The interior is cute, and I like that it has a USB charging port and an audio connection built in. It also has satellite radio capabilities, but I chose not to pay for this service. I also love the deal I got with payments right around $200 a month. The car is a great value for the money.
Story
I forgot I was driving stick once and wondered why the car was shaking after making a right turn onto another street. I was still in sixth gear.
Pros
It gets great gas mileage. It has USB charging port and audio input. It has satellite radio capabilities. The six-speed manual transmission is fun to drive. It has a large trunk for such a small car. The interior is nice looking. The body is cute. It has small tires, which will be cheap to replace when needed. It comes with a 100,000-mile factory warranty.
Cons
It is slow in accelerating. The seats are not comfortable for a long road trip. The model I bought did not come with cruise control, so I bought an aftermarket version, which does not have the same quality feel as something that came on the car. The engine does not always accelerate smoothly. The small car is easily buffeted by high winds.

Shopping at CarMax is great because you get to see a bunch of brands at once. Buying from CarMax is less stressful because there's no haggling. I was able to compare prices online after finding a car I liked, and this led me to know it was a good deal. The staff was nice and helpful, the location was convenient, and there was a wide selection of brands. They let me test drive the vehicle, of course!

The car we wanted wasn't on the lot so they looked at other dealerships until they found one. Then there was an issue with our financing but the money guy stayed until 8 to get everything straightened out. We went in that afternoon and walked out that night with the car we wanted at a good price.
