1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Tough and absolutely fun to ride in the mud and snow.
I drove my jeep for 3 years on a very rough road. Dirt, gravel with deep holes and ruts. It has plenty of power to deal with the mud in rainy weather and has great suspension to make the rough terrain fun and an easy ride. Love driving it and able to drive pretty fast on bad roads without feeling like you are being beat to death by bumps, holes and washboards. It is just a pleasure to drive and ride in. It has plenty of power to go where other SUV's just cannot get to or through. It will take a hill in pretty deep mud and snow. It was like no problem to get home in the worst of weather. Living 6 miles off road in the desert we tested its durability in the worst conditions possible. And getting home after a week of rain on my muddy road was sometimes a big challenge before we added grav... (more)
Story
the one story I continually get teased about is that I have a tendency to drive the jeep pretty fast on our dirt/gravel road in good weather. A coworker was driving parallel to my road on the interstate and he teases me that I was driving faster on my horrible road than he was on the interstate. Now I am pretty sure he was exaggerating just a bit. But, I do drive it pretty fast due to the grea... (more)
Pros
The top things about this vehicle is that it is tough and has all the power you need to get out of difficult situations. I live out in the desert and the dirt roads turn to slippery slime. Having a vehicle with the power to get out of the mud and get home in the rainy season is wonderful. The suspension and smooth ride is also pure luxury on these bumpy road. It is also a very fun ride. I could drive at pretty fast speeds on a bad road and has the ability to get you where you want to go. The fun part is that you could see how many mpg you were using as you drive, has many bells and whistle... (more)
Cons
The last year of driving we had to replace the fuel pump. To do so you have to remove the whole gas tank as it is inside the tank. Not that is so difficult to do and the thing is we got a bad fuel pump was defective. So to get it running properly it was having to remove the gas tank 2 times. A very costly repair.
Other negative thing is that it did not get good gas mileage yet with the amount of power for rough driving I don't mind too much.
The appearance on the wheels of the alloy rims have a tendency to pit and discolor. For looks you'd want to replace them with a nicer wheel.
2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee -
Our 2001 Grand Cherokee has been an absolute pleasure to own and drive. Comfortable on the highway and confident on the trails, this Jeep is at home anywhere. We take this vehicle on camping trips into the mountains of Colorado. Four-wheel-drive with low range has never let us down. We can go everywhere we want to go without worry. Snowy roads in the winter are equally easy; engaging "full-time 4WD" is as simple as pulling a lever. This Jeep has an excellent four-wheel-drive system with the ability to select 2WD, part-time 4WD, full-time 4WD, neutral, and 4WD low range. The difference between part-time and full-time 4WD is whether or not the front and rear axles are "locked" together. Part-time 4WD locks the axles, forcing them to rotate at the same speed. Full-time 4WD sends power to... (more)
Story
On an off-road trip that included a Range Rover, we had to use the Grand Cherokee for an emergency run back home to get a replacement for a broken air spring on the Range Rover.
Pros
The 2001 Grand Cherokee is very reliable. Over the course of 15+ years of ownership, we have had no significant problems. Maintenance is easy and inexpensive. The transfer case (four-wheel drive control) is easy to operate and understand.
Cons
Appropriate tires for this vehicle are not cheap. We probably could have purchased cheap, street tires, but that makes no sense when you have such an off-road-capable vehicle.
The four-liter engine is a workhorse, but it feels slightly underpowered at altitude.
