1997 Jeep Wrangler - This vehicle is my reliable best friend in a mechanical form.
My Jeep Wrangler has outlasted all my friends' vehicles. I've had her since 2003 and she's still going strong. My Jeep has been hit by other vehicles, including rear-ended and side-swiped, but each time she comes out with hardly a scratch. The Jeep is built like a tank, for sure. What I don't like about it, however, is that you have to get behind the dashboard to repair the ac or heat. This is expensive to do and thus I've been without heat the last winter.
Story
I drove this Jeep fifteen hours from Texas to Colorado to move in 2010. At that point, she had well-over 150,000 miles and everyone thought she was going to end up on the side of the road by the time we reached New Mexico. Five years later, she's still going strong.
Pros
The most positive thing about my Jeep is how easy it is to perform repairs on her (other than the ac and heat). That and parts are dirt cheap. Also, she's like a little Lego vehicle, which is great in the summer. You can take the doors right off the Jeep, as well as the top. I had her entire exhaust system and catalytic converter replaces for only $780.00. Yeah, it's a pretty penny, but that's one-third of the cost for most cars.
Cons
Unfortunately, the ac in the Jeep, even when working, just isn't that great. Also, the paint tends to spider and peel pretty quickly. Also, the soft tops tend to fade within just a few years and crack in the winter. The soft top can run you around $350 to replace, and that's off eBay.
2003 Jeep Wrangler - Solid and Dependable
My jeep is highly reliable and simple to maintain. It has never had any major mechanical issues and the only maintenance that has been necessary is the usual wear-and-tear that happens after 10+ years. It drives nicely and doesn't have any quirks that are a problem on a regular basis. Overall, I've been very satisfied with my vehicle.
Story
I was able to load up my jeep with my tent and camping gear and go on a two-week road trip to explore the southeastern part of the United States.
Pros
Extremely reliable, very durable (i.e., has endured weather, minor accidents, and normal wear-and-tear better than any other vehicle I have owned), good for driving both in the city and off-road, decent gas mileage for an older vehicle, and comfortable enough for me.
Cons
The car itself is far from a "luxury" vehicle, and I know that many people complain about how rough it is to ride in or how uncomfortable the seats are. It also has had some odd electrical issues that don't really affect day-to-day use, but also aren't easy to address and haven't been something that most mechanics can resolve. Finally, if you want to add any "bells and whistles" to a jeep, it's super expensive - the aftermarket additions are very, very costly.
