My wife and I were looking for a low-cost, dependable vehicle a couple of years ago and decided upon a Mazda3. From a dependability standpoint - getting you from point A to point B with low maintenance and little to no repairs - this has been an excellent choice and something I would recommend to anyone.
Story
Living in the Bay Area, California, there are a number of great roads that go into the mountains or follow the coast. There have been a number of road trips along the California coast, listening to books on tape that have been pretty unforgettable in this vehicle.
Pros
The top positive things are the dependability and low maintenance costs on this vehicle. We have driven the vehicle over 60,000 miles and have only needed to service the vehicle at the major milestone checkpoints (30,000 + 60,000). Outside of these milestones, we've only needed to do oil changes and replace the tires. From the standpoint of not needing to put money in this car, this has been a great vehicle.
Cons
The only two negatives to this car are increasing levels of road noise and good, but not great, miles per gallon. At around the 50,000 mile point, my wife and I did notice quite a bit of road noise on the highway when going faster than 60mph. I first noticed this when needing to turn up the volume on the car radio on the highway. Also, the fuel efficiency is fine, but probably relative to other cars in its class, its just middle-of-the-road.

This car has great power with the 2.4 L engine. This car class has great leather seats and a luxury-looking interior. The car is very noisy, however, in terms of outside street noise, and in terms of rattles and noise within the car. The build quality is good.
Story
Driving around the curves is what this car is known for, and I have tested it out on mountain roads.
Pros
The colors it was offered in were great, as were the interior features. The leather seats have held up, and the trunk is spacious. There has been only 1 recall on it, but I have not been bothered with any other recalls. The glove compartment is so big, you can fit a laptop computer in it. This car zips around and is pretty fast.
Cons
This car is noisy, and the exterior paint has not held up well over the years. The CD player also broke down a few years in, and it was too expensive to get it replaced by then.

I loved going to this dealership. The person that sold me the car wasn't trying to rush me and he wasn't pushy at all. He answered all my questions and really took his time with me. It was my best car-buying experience!
