My wife and I were looking for a low-cost, dependable vehicle a couple of years ago and decided upon a Mazda3. From a dependability standpoint - getting you from point A to point B with low maintenance and little to no repairs - this has been an excellent choice and something I would recommend to anyone.
Story
Living in the Bay Area, California, there are a number of great roads that go into the mountains or follow the coast. There have been a number of road trips along the California coast, listening to books on tape that have been pretty unforgettable in this vehicle.
Pros
The top positive things are the dependability and low maintenance costs on this vehicle. We have driven the vehicle over 60,000 miles and have only needed to service the vehicle at the major milestone checkpoints (30,000 + 60,000). Outside of these milestones, we've only needed to do oil changes and replace the tires. From the standpoint of not needing to put money in this car, this has been a great vehicle.
Cons
The only two negatives to this car are increasing levels of road noise and good, but not great, miles per gallon. At around the 50,000 mile point, my wife and I did notice quite a bit of road noise on the highway when going faster than 60mph. I first noticed this when needing to turn up the volume on the car radio on the highway. Also, the fuel efficiency is fine, but probably relative to other cars in its class, its just middle-of-the-road.

This is a fun car to drive. It is attractive especially to me. I bought it at the age of 20 and it targets my age group very well. The mileage on the car is good for not being a hybrid. The power is decent enough for the gas mileage you get. Against all other hatchbacks this has the whole package for the least price compared to other brands.
Story
Going off-roading
Pros
Space inside the vehicle. For a compact car, the Mazda 3 5-door edition is quite roomy. The backseat can comfortably fit three normal sized people. With the model I purchased the speakers are amazing. They are Bose and have a lot of base. The overall price of the care is very acceptable when compared to more luxury brands.
Cons
Compared to some cars the power is not all there. If you want power you will have to pick up the turbo version if the car which is the Mazda speed 3. The Mazda three only has 184 horsepower. While the car isn't ugly the long nose does have a weird look. Other luxury hot hatches such as the Lexus cth has a much more aggressive sleek look to it.

I loved going to this dealership. The person that sold me the car wasn't trying to rush me and he wasn't pushy at all. He answered all my questions and really took his time with me. It was my best car-buying experience!
