Do you like driving sporty vehicles? Do you like excessive customization? Do you love being a part of a community? Do you want a vehicle you have to look at just one last time before you walk away from it? If you answered "yes" to these, then you want a MINI. Highly customizable, sporty, available in multiple luxurious packages, and from a long line of racing blood, MINI offers a wide range of internal and external options for that iconic little car with the big personality.
Story
I hate I can only share one, so I'll share one that actually repeats itself regularly. MINI has its own community, from the rabid car fanatic down to the basic hobbyist. A lot of times when I go shopping at my local supermarket, I come back to another MINI or two parked next to mine. Rule #1 of MINI ownership, always park next to any other MINI! I've even come out to see I missed one, but they... (more)
Pros
What isn't there to love about the iconic MINI Cooper? Sleek, sporty, and fun, the MINI has never failed to illicit a smile from passerby even on the shortest of drives. It's incredibly fun to navigate tight corners that would flip a larger car, has a surprising amount of room, and is quite gas efficient despite using Premium fuel. While one might balk at the price of upkeep and maintenance, MINI doesn't fail to deliver over-all quality and a refreshing and unique interior design. Besides... how could anyone be anything other than happy driving something so adorable!?
Cons
My biggest concerns with my car are more for my personal vehicle than for the MINI brand itself. The biggest issue in my eyes for MINI is that it is owned by BMW. They are notoriously expensive and are not made for the DIY mechanic or penny-pincher. A lot of MINI parts require special tools for both repairs and diagnostics, and MINI doesn't escape the norm for certain parts that are just bad across the board. (Like 2009 MINI R56 being known for having an issue with the transmission). Even the common repair shop cannot handle basic repairs on a MINI. I found that out the hard way. If you ne... (more)

I have owned my Mini for over seven years. I bought the base model, a 2009 Hardtop Cooper. It is an aesthetically pleasing car - maroon with black stripes on the hood and a black leather interior. However, looks aren't everything. I was fortunate enough to sign up for Geico's extended warranty program for the first six years I owned it. The extended warranty was worth every penny, as the car is in the shop three to four times a year with a major issue. I now own the car outright, and would like to keep it a few more years to avoid a car payment, but I will need to purchase another extended warranty. I've found my Mini to have significant engine problems that would have cost a lot to repair had the warranty not been in place.
Story
I took my Mini on a drive to the western part of Virginia, in the mountains. It was hilarious! Each time I went up the mountain, the car would hesitate to drive up. It would slow down (maximum 60 mph speed). On the way back down the mountain, it was a free fall - 80 mph without pushing the accelerator!
Pros
This car handles well. Since it is so small, I am able to navigate through traffic without much difficulty, as it fits everywhere. It is a good-looking car. It stands out on the road. It has run-flat tires, which is helpful - if I run over a nail, I know I don't have to pull over immediately to change a tire. I can drive 40-50 miles before taking care of it. The double sun roof is a great feature during the summer. The car can be personalized to meet my needs.
Cons
It has engine issues - ignore the salesperson who tells you that the engine oil only needs to be changed once every 12 months. This is a lie and will lead to engine problems down the road. Run flat tires are expensive - $200 each, and they normally need to be replaced every 20K miles. Brakes are expensive. I typically pay $400 for a brake job. I find electronic problems pop up in the winter. I believe this is due to the cold weather. This is a car that likes to be in the garage, not stored on your driveway.
