My 2011 Subaru Impreza 2.i Premium has been the most valuable purchase I have ever made. It's 4 cylinder, 2.5 liter boxer engine has been through hell and back with me and has never left me stranded or stalled. The car has been on and off road in different states and different terrains and has yet to show me a barrier I couldn't cross. It's reliability has surpassed any vehicle I have owned from Swedish to Korean cars. At 90,000 miles I have only replaced 2 belts, regular oil changes, a few bulbs and fuses, and my brake system. Even when I go to a dealership to get it checked out they are surprised of the minimum maintenance it has had.
Story
Going through a blizzard in my 2011 Impreza in Colorado with all season tires was a bit frightful at first, but when we had the dream of snowboarding in Colorado's famous mountains, me and a buddy had to pull the trigger. Watching cars like AWD Honda CRVs and Suburbans sliding on the freeway around us, made me realize how crazy of an AWD system this car had. We went to mountain after mountain,... (more)
Pros
The pros on the vehicle has to start with the maintenance. As stated above, I have spent less than $1,500 since buying it 7 years ago in service and so far it doesn't seem to need much more in the near future. If you are interested in modifying it, there are so many different platforms you can get parts for an upgrade to. The all wheel drive system has gotten me through mud, heavy snowfall, and the heavy rain (that we sometimes get) in California.
Cons
The interior of the car is majority plastic, which after some time rattles. I expected this buying a Subaru because anything more than plastic would wear and break which equals more money. The all wheel drive system is a gas guzzler, and sometimes when heavy driving I feel as if I am in a small SUV. The turning on the car stock isn't so great (i.e. handling) and if I didn't upgrade my suspension to a newer models, I think my back would hurt a little more.

2008 Subaru Impreza - Subaru love.

I have owned this car for nearly ten years and have not had any major mechanical problems with it. The car has nearly 175,000 miles on it currently and is still running strong. There have been some minor problems, but none have been very expensive to repair. The most expensive repair has been the air conditioning unit, which cost approximately $500 to repair. Another minor problem is the sun visor, which broke at the hinge. The repair specialist at Subaru said that it's a fairly common problem. That cost about $70 for a replacement.
Story
I went snow camping in the mountains once and found my Subaru Impreza buried in a foot of snow. Luckily, the snow plow came right as I was arriving at my car and cleared the road enough for me to drive out. The snow came down hard during the drive home, and I didn't have chains, but the all-wheel drive got me home safely.
Pros
The best thing about the vehicle is the Subaru symmetric all-wheel drive. It has saved me from having to use chains on many snowy drives. I feel confident driving in snowy conditions. I think the car is a great value -- the car was relatively cheap to purchase, and the maintenance costs are not too high. It has been reliable with no major mechanical issues over ten years and 175,000 miles.
Cons
Gas mileage could be better. I also wish the ground clearance were a little higher -- out of all the Subaru cars, the Impreza has one of the lowest ground clearances, though they now have the Crosstrek -- which is basically the same car with a higher ground clearance.
