This truck still runs great after 18 years. I have had only one major repair - rack and pinion replacement. It's the best vehicle I've ever owned. I love the high clearance. It's very safe to drive, because you can see the road much better than from low-clearance vehicles. This model is much more attractive than the new Tacomas. It is also special because of the low or no tech. Very simple to drive. Low tech means less stuff to break down. Manual windows are safer in my mind.
Story
Perfect road trip car for Schipperkes! Three of these adorable dogs traveled to coast and were very comfortable. In fact, one of them recognized the truck and would not get out hoping we'd go on another road trip.
Pros
Low cost, very few repairs needed. Low tech, clean and simple to drive. Attractive. High clearance, bumpy or muddy roads are no problem. Good visibility, can see the road clearly.
Cons
This particular model is not good on icy roads. Cab leaks, keep under cover so not a big problem for me.

My truck is more than 14 years old and it still looks like new. People cannot believe it is a 1999 model. I choose the Prerunner because it has the high clearance of a 4 wheel drive without the 4 wheel drive price. I found that I cannot drive low clearance cars anymore. The visibility is a huge plus for me. I feel safe in this truck. The gas mileage for a truck is ok. It gets about 24 miles per gallon. I have had no major repairs for 13 years. This year, I needed about $1500 worth of work done to replace the shocks and struts. I owned a Ford for 12 years. It was truly fix or repair daily. The Toyota is much more reliable. The quality is top notch. Original parts are still good.
Story
It is a great truck for small dogs. My neighbor had two schipperkes and I had one. We would travel to the coast together. The pups were so comfortable in the extended cab. They had such a great time on our trips. One day, when my neighbor was walking her dogs, her male pup noticed me driving by and stopped in his tracks. He wanted to jump in the truck so much! Good association for him.
Pros
The reliability The look of the truck. The high clearance. Great on dirt roads Safe to drive on the freeway Comfortable interior
Cons
The prerunner is a rear wheel drive Not good in snow and ice Gas mileage is low for today's standards

They have a very nice facility, so it is not unpleasant to visit there. The car salesmen were accommodating.
