Despite being nearly 10 years old, the styling is still eye catching and distinctive. A number of times people comment that the car looks new. By now everyone is familiar with the Z4 roadster but the coupe catches people off guard. The car has been quite reliable for me through the years. Outside of the typical oil changes, filter changes, ties and maintenance I have had only a few repairs. The cupholders, one coil pack and one sway bar end link have broken in 140,000 miles. With proper winter tires, it can even handle a good amount of snow. The engine is very solid. The only knock against it is that the valves have to be adjusted. There are instructions on how to do it yourself if you are mechanically incline or you can take it to the dealer. To be honest this is the only thing that ... (more)
Pros
The engine is silky smooth & responsive. Gas mileage is good if you are not in stop & go traffic. Insurance rate is not bad. Styling is nice. Reliability is great.
Cons
Poorly designed cupholders. Valves need adjustment once a year. Sun visors do not swing outward.

This is my first BMW, and when I got it was beyond my expectations. Build quality is amazing; interior materials feel high quality, and fit snugly with each other. Seats are very comfortable and have a lot of adjustability. Ride quality is very focus on performance, but still forgiving on bumpy roads/surfaces. My model came loaded with a premium BOSE stereo, having 12 speakers. Comes with front, side, and knee airbags. Top goes up and down in less then 12 seconds. Visibility is very good, although the side pillars are hefty, as it is understandable they need extra sturdiness due to convertible factors of design. Engine is very smooth, very powerful, but yet still efficient, I usually get 34mpg on average. Engines is a work of art, shifting is super precise and gear ratios or spot on. ... (more)
Story
I live in Pennsylvania in a mountain region of the state. I remember taking this car for my first ride, and once I hit that first twist on the road, it gave me the biggest smile I have ever had! I think my mouth was hurting that night from smiling so much, its a nice place to be..
Pros
Fun factor Great engineering Fuel Economy Power, smoothness of the engine BMW Warranty Resale value Built Quality Loyal following
Cons
Pricey ($37,000) Stock tires run flats only, no spare If something breaks and the car is out of warranty, expensive parts and service! Premium fuel only Visibility with a pillars being chunky

If you're looking for a convertible, you can go wrong with the BMW Z4. The model I have is the last year they were still doing the fully-automated soft top, and they've since switched to a fully-automated hard top; but I haven't had any problems with my soft top so I think you'd be fine either way. (Guess the main point would be what type of "look" you want.) The acceleration is great, especially when moving through rush hour traffic. And if you want to go the automatic transmission route (like I did), you'll still get quite a bit of responsiveness. (One of my friends who swears by standard stopped giving me grief after driving it himself.) Past that, styling is great; interior looks good; and you'll get plenty of compliments from strangers.
Story
When I'd had the car for about a month, a friend of mine took me out to teach me how to do donuts (I'd had a Taurus before this so I'd never learned). Definitely worth doing a few times!!
Pros
Acceleration/responsiveness Styling (black paint with red leather) Interior stylings (leather & other materials) Sport suspension 10 speaker stereo (with line-in aux and mp3 support) Bluetooth, hands-free, phone connection Driving is just sheer fun Putting the top down
Cons
Expensive to maintain (and dealers aren't where they should be for the brand's image) AC/heater could be more powerful for those days it's just not the right temperature to have the top down cup holders are a little flimsy (pop out from under the AC vent) - had to replace each within the first year factory wheels are cheap, cracked a couple on the crappy roads around here and went after-market instead (much better choice)
