When I leased the Nissan LEAF in 2013, there were very few of these on the roads in North Carolina, and the electric loading infrastructure was very poor. However, I recognized the potential of electric vehicles and wanted to give my young daughter a very early idea what good stewardship of this earth means and translates into. To make a long story short, while our LEAF, called Snowy by my daughter, is not the prettiest of any of the cares on the modern road, it is the most reliable, trustworthy and environmentally safe cars. The ride is exceptional in that it is quiet and all drive data is positive, ranging from acceleration to top speed to electric consumption. It naturally helped that there was no longer any consumption of gasoline, but only free reloading of electricity in North Ca... (more)
Historia
My daughter and I have taken many weekend trips from Charlotte to Hendersonville and back with the LEAF. One of the endearing statistics the LEAF accumulates is how many trees you save by using this vehicle instead of a gasoline engine vehicle. This is one of my daughter's most favorite features on the LEAF as she feels that she actively helps the environment.
A Favor
The greatest pros about this vehicle are its economy, space, superior ride, quickness and agility and quiet ride. We have enjoyed outings in our LEAF in every season and have to say that it is a super reliable car that is easy on the wallet. Anyone looking for a reliable car for city traffic, or a commuter vehicle can buy/ lease this vehicle with a good conscience as it is clean energy that provides its ride. Above all the technical aspects of this electrical vehicle that are amazing, its fabulous data center and connectivity and its great economy, above all the LEAF is fun to drive and pr... (more)
En Contra
There are two aspects that LEAF users must get used to in the initial phase of car ownership that equally applies to all electric vehicles. The fact that each electric vehicle has a certain range after reloading the batteries takes a bit of getting used to. Range anxiety is definitely something I experienced with several female passengers, while I learned to predict the actual battery range better than the computer, whose algorithm can only forecast the driving range basis the last data from the last 10 miles driven. The other item to become familiar with is its road behavior during the wi... (more)

2013 Nissan LEAF - Well made, economical, environmentally friendly, a good fit for in-town commuting.

Initially, I was skeptical the Leaf would have enough power - even after the test drive. However, after driving it a few days you learn that this car is really quite fast from a standing stop. The acceleration is almost instantaneous, where with a gas-powered car there's a real lag as the car gets up to speed. Nissan calls it "torque" or something similar. Also, although it's not made for long-range travel, as it only covers about 90 miles at full charge, it's certainly got enough range for commuting around town and running errands.

The car is so quiet, I often sneak up on and startle people walking in my neighborhood. Even dogs don't often realize a car has driven up right behind them.
A Favor
The car is very quiet due to it being electric-powered. While road noise from the tires is still there, the engine noise is gone - regardless of the speed. To me, this makes for a far more pleasurable, soothing ride. The car is also roomy; it's a 5-passenger sedan. Even five adults fit comfortably as the backseat has quite a bit of headroom and the floorboard is flat (no hump due to the transmission). There is also quite a bit of room in the hatch area. The well is deep and can hold a lot of groceries, etc.
En Contra
Design wise, this car is not attractive. I think Nissan had to focus on aerodynamics, and they wanted it to look significantly different than other cars on the road. I would really enjoy seeing the manufacturer update this car to something that, while visually different, is much more pleasing. I know they're working on it, but building out the charging infrastructure is important. If you're running low on the charge, it can be a bit of a hunt to find a public recharging station.
