The 2013 Subaru Forester is durable and cheap to operate. It's safe to drive in snowy and icy weather, and it has enough room (with the rear seats down) to carry gear. The cross-bars on top provide more storage options for recreation equipment. The gas mileage is better than predicted, particularly on the highway. The acceleration is not great but I expected that. The car is a stable easy and cheap to operate vehicle for the person who sometimes needs extra space and who sometimes needs all-wheel drive in bad weather. The interior is comfortable, though its looks are similar to earlier models. Older models had weather stations on the radio; this unfortunately does not. Basic do-it-yourself maintenance is easy. It's a reliable cheap car for people who need that and don't care about ... (more)

I was taking our kayaks out once and came upon a large SUV stuck in a rain gully across a gravel road near the Delaware River in Pennsylvania. The Forester was able to traverse the same ditch without a problem. We took the two people in the big SUV (which cost about $20,000 more) into town where they waited for a tow truck.
A Favor
The gas mileage is usually 30-32 mpg. Most of all this car is reliable. It doesn't break down, plus it can carry two kayaks on the roof.
En Contra
The interior is dated, there is no weather radio and pick-up is weak.

2013 Subaru Forester - Comfortable and fun to drive.

After nearly 6 years, I am still enjoying my 2013 Subaru Forester. It has one of the most comfortable driver’s seats I’ve ever sat in. Unlike many other vehicles, the headrest does not push my head forward to an uncomfortable position. And for some reason I just can’t put my finger on, it’s just plain feels good to drive. Maybe it’s the road feel or the response, but I noticed it when shopping similar models by other makes. It has a sport mode which gives it extra perk. I don’t use this very often because it does reduce the gas mileage, but it is very useful for some added “oomph” merging on a busy highway or making a left turn with limited space. It doesn’t have the most cargo space among cars in its class, but it’s enough for the usual schlepping of groceries, sports equipment and ho... (more)

My husband took the car on a skiing trip with some buddies to some mountains not far from here. It was still fairly new at the time, and he wanted to test out it's famed ability to get through snow, so he found an empty, unplowed parking lot in a state park and had some fun putting on more speed and fast turns than he normally would have, then took a side road from the lot that went uphill. It... (more)

Comfortable to sit in. Just feels good to drive it. Feels solid moving in snow and bad weather. Takes regular gas. Rear seats fold down easily to expand cargo area. Lumbar support for driver's seat. Maneuvers easily with tight turning range. Easy to park. Has back-up camera. Has sport mode for faster acceleration. Original brakes and tires have lasted a long time. Non-skid surface keeps cargo from sliding around. Not the snazziest appearance, but designed for good visibility.
En Contra
Have encountered a number of problems with the electrical system, mainly with the speakers, one of which had to be disconnected so that it would not cause a fire. Tail lights seem to go out more often than in other cars I've owned. Engine is noisier than I like. Engine had rattling early on. Was determined to be the heat shields which were replaced, but it still does it a little now and then when cold. No lumbar support for passenger seat. Limited choice of colors with light colored interior. License plate frame rattles every time I close the hatch.
