I purchased my 1998 Ford Explorer this past April. It has a manual transmission and at the time of purchase it had just over 100,000 miles on it. It needed to have some parts replaced, but after the needed repairs were done, and a new set of tires were put on it, I paid less than $4500 total for the vehicle. I like the look of the vehicle, and the gas mileage I get is not as bad as I had anticipated. This is possibly due to the manual transmission. I feel safe in this vehicle, and that is very important to me. I would prefer that it were an automatic, however. When I bought it I didn't know how to drive a stick shift, so I had to learn. I don't drive very often so I still don't feel completely comfortable with it in that regard. The quality, however, is quite good, especiall... (more)
Pros
I love the fact that this vehicle is an SUV. I've always liked the look of SUVs and the way they handle. The seats are very comfortable and there is plenty of space, which is great. I also like that for an SUV from the late 90s, the mileage I get on it is not bad at all. I read somewhere that this vehicle gets 15/20 mpg on city and highway roads respectively.
Cons
As stated in my review, I would spend a bit more in gas to have an automatic transmission. I'm getting more comfortable with it as I drive it more, but it does make me a bit nervous, should I be confronted with a situation on the road that requires me to act quickly.

My son was looking for a Ford Bronco, which is one of the very early SUV models from Ford. We had had a new one when he was a child and he liked it then. After he grew up, he always wanted a Ford. So, he searched and found 1990 fully restored Ford Bronco. It is a heavy duty vehicle with a great, clean body style still after all these years. My son travels a lot and feels comfortable and safe in this roomy vehicle. The Bronco is a sturdy, heavy, manly vehicle and was a great seller for Ford. It has held its value and its looks, and is known to be a rugged vehicle. This restored one is beautiful with a dark blue color and beige trim, with cream leather seats and a rich looking interior. On the outside, it looks manly, but on the inside, it is somewhat luxurious. It is a great vehicle. Th... (more)
Pros
The pros are it still has a clean, sharp, sporty body line after these many years. The truck looks solid. It is an SUV, but it is so roomy and big, there is almost the storage capacity of a truck because the back seats allow for folding flat to accommodate most things you would like to haul. The engine is easier to work on than some foreign models where you have to hunt for everything and then find, it is hard to get to. All in all, the Ford Bronco is a sturdy, reliable vehicle.
Cons
The biggest negative for this Ford SUV is gas mileage. It is a big vehicle and it does drink the gas. That was the biggest negative, but for driving a lot of interstate miles, it isn't too bad on gas. It is driving back and forth on short little trips to town, that eat the gas.
