I have owned my Saturn Ion 2 for several years now. It currently has over 120,000 miles on it. I believe that it is a great family car not only because the cost of ownership was very reasonable, but also because I have had to put very little money into it outside of normal maintenance. My family and I have taken several long trips (2,000 miles +), as well as using it for everyday use. I have never had trouble starting it. The engine runs as if it were brand new. The automatic transmission still shifts without slipping. As for safety, all GM vehicles come equipped with OnStar. This allows my family and I to feel comfortable and confident every time we leave the house.
Story
My best memory while driving my car was the scenery that my family and I got to see one morning as the sun came up on one of our trips. I had started driving shortly before dawn. As the sun came up, we were able to see it through the hills. The sky was beautiful and the kids enjoyed the sights.
Pros
The best part of the Saturn Ion 2 for my family is its reliability. With 120,000 + miles, it has started up without a problem every time we use it, even in sub-zero temperatures. My family is on a tight budget and cannot afford to put extensive repairs into a vehicle. To date, we have had to put less than 1,200 dollars into the car, outside of normal maintenance.
Cons
There are two cons that come to mind when thinking about my Saturn. The first is the lack of comfort on long trips. After riding for a few hours, it becomes hard to sit comfortably. This causes us to make frequent stops to stretch, making our trip longer. The second con is the poor side impact ratings. This concerns me as I have two young children.

2007 Saturn Ion - Quit sleeping on the Saturn Ion 2.

The Saturn Ion 2 is a reasonable car for its cost. This value includes a car that is reliable and simplistic. This is a great car to take and pick up the kids from school or clock in and out of work. It's incredibly simplistic for new drivers so you will not feel overwhelmed being behind the wheel with this vehicle. The plastic frame may be a drawback to some consumers, but the no rust nor dents is a mighty good trade off. The performance is a bang for the buck. This car is perfect for new drivers because it drives modestly and has a above par fuel economy. It's affordable and simplistic; it's the perfect car for those who are starting or learning how to drive. It's the type of car that will get the job done without throwing any fits. During your grocery runs, out of town traveling, go... (more)
Story
I always looked forward to picking up my friends to go to track practice. The backseat was crammed, but we didn't mind.
Pros
Simplicity. Radio. Drives and handles well. Fuel economy. Plastic means no rust or dents.
Cons
Costly maintenance. Ignition switch recall.
