2007 Saturn Ion - Most Reliable Car I have Ever Driven!

The car is compact and easy to drive. It's roomy enough to fit 3 adults in the back seat and has decent trunk space. Everything functions well, regular maintenance parts are affordable and very easy to replace. I am a female, I like to tinker around and learn to do things on YouTube. I was able to replace the air filter myself.
Story
Our streets often flood when it rains. One night, i was driving home from work and it was so dark and rainy I couldn't see how much water was in the street. As I drove down the road, a block from my house, the car started sputtering and came to a dead stop. I opened the door and the water started coming in. I ran home and called some friends. By the time I got back to the car, about 10 mi... (more)
Pros
I bought the car used about seven years ago and have not needed any maintenance on it thus far (with exception of the regular oil change, tire replacement, etc). This car is very reliable.
Cons
There are a few blind spots that cause me to lean forward or back to double check for safety. The first is on the left and right of the windshield - the metal is so thick you sometimes can't see when stopped at an intersection. Hard to tell if a person is standing on the corner or if a car is coming at you. The other is with the placement of the rearview mirror - I often have to lean forward to see under the mirror. I'm not sure if this is manufacturer placement or due to the OnStar system the dealer placed in the car. The mirror is big and bulky.

The '06 Saturn Ion has stayed in very good shape after 70,000 miles (and counting). The silver exterior has stood up remarkably well for a vehicle that has mostly been parked outdoors in all seasonal weather. After driving various other Saturn vehicles and some from other manufacturers, I've found the Ion to be my favorite to drive, particularly on extended drives or vacations. It was always comfortable as a passenger or driver when driving 3 or more hours in a sitting. It has good space and room for a family of four that packs too much while not appearing bulky or large from outside which helps maintain a slightly "cooler" appearance than many 4-door vehicles.
Pros
The entire dashboard display of the '06 Ion is in the center of the car as opposed to in front of the driver as in most vehicles. The display is slightly angled towards the driver to make it easier to see and I've found it a lot easier (and safer) to glance a bit down and to the right instead of straight down, which takes my eyes completely off the road. It also adds a bit of flavor and style to the front of the vehicle. The visibility is better in the Ion than in any other car I've driven. In some vehicles I have to really stretch my neck in order to check blind spots but either the fram... (more)
Cons
All four doors have had fairly consistent issues during winter with ice and frost. However, this is the type of winter weather that I'm not sure any door handles well. Noise while driving on the highway or interstate was fairly loud compared to that of some other vehicles. I've joked that the humming noise reminds me of the pod racing in Star Wars.

When we first purchased a used 2006 Saturn Ion, it was a godsend. My mother had always been a fan of Saturn so we thought there wouldn't be any problems. Boy, were we wrong. After a couple of years, the transmission fell out on the highway going 80 mph. Oops. After having it replaced (which was a whole other problem), it fell out AGAIN just two months later. We finally got it sorted out only to have the AC start leaking through the passenger floor. We had it looked at not once, not twice, but three times, and nobody could fix it. About a year ago, my mother started to smell gas emanating from the trunk yet we couldn't find the source. Then we received a letter, then it was all over the news: This model, along with many others released by GM (who bought Saturn out years ago), was being ... (more)
Story
None.
Pros
The car looks rather sporty and has a nice silhouette. The seats are comfortable. It's very easy to hook up Sirius radio.
Cons
The car shuts off while in motion; the steering wheel occasionally locks up and the brakes have had to be replaced multiple times. It leaks from both the trunk and under the hood, presumably from the air conditioning, and no one has been able to tell us how to fix it. This car is one of the models that GM recently recalled.
