1997 Saturn S-Series - Saturns may be old, but they are reliable!
My Saturn S-Series is over 20 years old, but with its relatively low mileage (~60k), and it's good gas mileage, it has been the perfect starter car. For one, I love that the exterior is a plastic that does not rust or scratch easily. The tan cloth seats also ensure that the car does not get too hot in the summer heat. In addition, both the heating and AC system are very powerful--it does not take very long for my car to heat up or cool down. My only complaints are that the fabric at the top of the car's interior has worn away and become shredded, and the power windows can often take a long time to roll up or down. In addition, sometimes my key can get stuck in the ignition such that I can't turn it, which can be frustrating. Another potentially negative thing is how this vehicle fairs ... (more)

Once, I was driving home at night in the snow and it was very hard to stop in intersections. I actually slid out because the brakes locked up. Due to this, I would not recommend this car in areas that face inclement weather.
My favorite memory was taking my car all the way from Delaware up to New Hampshire and back. It's the longest journey my car has ever had, and we were a little bit dubious if it would make it. However, it held up the entire way, and it didn't cost as much in gas as I would have expected.

My favorite thing about this car is its general reliability. In the past few years I have not had to make many repairs to it. It's only broken down once. In addition, I love how much space I get for it being a sedan. I can put my seats in the back down and pack my entire car with things. The back seat is also very roomy compared to other cars, so even people who are slightly taller can be comfortable. In addition, the cassette player has held up over time as well. It is compatible with an auxiliary device, which means I can still listen to my favorite songs without having a built in USB cable or a CD. It is also very cheap to fill up on gas, and the gas mileage is relatively good. Typically, if the gas is cheap, I can fill my tank for under twenty dollars. For having paid 1,000 for this car, combined with the minimal repairs its required, and the fact that many cars similar to this can often last until 200k miles, I feel safe and optimistic driving this car. It was clearly constructed to last for a very long time and for very many miles, which means my initial investment will hopefully pay off.
My least favorite things about this car include the fabric of the roof's interior, the way that it fairs in poor weather, and the sound system. Often times, the sound system will go in and out as I drive. Sometimes when I hit bumps, it will fade out on one side, and then when I hit another bump, it will come back. In addition, sometimes the front windshield can fog up really badly during the cold weather, since the window takes a while to heat up with the rest of the car. This can be very frustrating while driving and still being able to maintain visibility. The other frustrating thing is ... (more)

The windows are power windows, and do not have a roll down option. However, the windows take forever to go down to the point where often times I have to manually force them down. Cars will end up lining up behind me, and in the worst case scenario I often just open my door to scan my car. The other issue I have is sometimes my engine needs servicing light will come on arbitrarily, and I won't know if the car actually has to be taken in or if it is just a glitch. The bottom of the interior of the car is fabric, so this can also be sometimes a pain to clean and vacuum, since the type of fabric is conducive to things sticking to it.
1997 Saturn S-Series - Good "Ole Blue."
The Saturn SL2 was my first car. It was may car for college. It was a few years old when I received it as a gift from my mother. I used it mostly for work in the area, partying with my friends and driving up and down the coast in California.

I remember driving up the California coast with my college buddies with the windows down while drinking milk shakes.

The good things about the car was that it was reliable and safe. I think it was the perfect car for me for college. The interior was mostly clean. It was a standard dark grey upholstery and tan colored cloth. It had a lot of space and the basic radio, CD player, A/C, etc. that one would expect in such a car at the time.

The driver side window gave me trouble for years. It wouldn't roll do in cold weather. The interior started to fade, and the ceiling cloth started to hang. After a while, it was becoming too expensive to maintain the vehicle, and it had quite a few miles on it (over 150K).
