2000 Saturn S-Series - Reliable and solid car.
I have driven this Saturn over 10 years, and it has over 200,000 miles on it. It is still running without any major mechanical difficulties. In fact, it has never had any mechanical difficulties. It has been a reliable vehicle. It has been inexpensive, in the sense that I haven’t had major repair bills. It also has been inexpensive in the sense that the gas mileage is excellent. It uses roughly half the gas that our pick-up truck uses for the same distances. So for the past ten years, I basically drive it, put gas in it, put oil in it, and take it in for regular maintenance. It is so easy. The exterior also has not had any rust, and is still in good condition. On the other hand, it does have its small annoyances. It has a 4-cylinder engine, and it accelerates very slowly. I can never p... (more)
Story
When my daughter was young, we had a fun family road trip to Lake Michigan, singing songs, playing license plate games, and other travel games all the way there. This is a nice, solid car to take a road trip in!
Pros
This is an exceptionally reliable car. Not only has it surpassed ten years and 200,000 miles, but it shows no sign of wearing out. It still is not having any mechanical issues. The exterior has not developed any rust spots. It is a solid car. It also feels very sturdy and very solid, like it would hold up well in an accident (which is what accident studies also report). Its gas mileage is excellent as well.
Cons
It feels like a car chosen for economy. It is boxy and not even remotely exciting. The interior has a lot of plastic, and over the past ten years, it has broken in parts. It accelerates very slowly, and one has to take care entering a highway that one has enough "runway" to come up to speed. Finally, it fogs incredibly easily, and that can be inconvenient, and at times, a detriment to safe driving.
2000 Saturn S-Series - Solid car.
This has been the only car I have ever owned and I've owned it for almost 16 years, so it's going to be tough to top! Over that length of time the Saturn has been extremely reliable, with zero major problems over it's life so far, so I love the reliability. The gas mileage is still better than most new cars these days so I love that fact as well, even though there isn't a TON of power, it's still fun to drive.
Story
In college I fit 9 other people into the car for a late night run to Taco Bell. Of course we got pulled over, but the officer just laughed because we weren't drinking and driving, just going for some late night tacos.
Pros
I have done a lot of the work on the car over the last 5 or so years, and other than the car being low to the ground, I love how accessible and easy to fix things are on the car. I'm afraid of getting a new car because I hear how difficult and specialized things are now. I also love the community that the car had developed offering so much advice to fellow Saturn fans.
Cons
One negative thing is my car suffered the same problem as many of the some model did, and that was a poor intake gasket that almost everyone suffered from, and needed fixed. Something else that I don't really enjoy is how low to the ground the car is. If I'm sore or tired from work or exercise, it really is another chore to get in and out of it. Also being a small car it has made it a little more difficult to move around from place to place as I can only fit so much, hardly even a snowboard.
