2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara - Suzuki Vitara - Okay Buy
I purchased my Suzuki the same year I married my husband (back in 2010). I had just totaled my last vehicle and needed a vehicle to help me accommodate and shuttle my new husband and his daughter. I had $12K in my pocket and needed a vehicle for just my tiny family of three persons (and maybe one more soon), and one that had good gas mileage. At the time I believed that my Suzuki would meet those qualifications. It was compact, had advertised good gas mileage, and I was able to purchase it without a car payment. Win-win! Almost the day after we drove the vehicle off the lot I began to experience issues, though. The car constantly needs oil, the A/C has needed topping off twice, the headlight is always out, and the gas mileage does not live up to all that was promised. Now that ... (more)
Story
It was nice to create fun new memories with my daughter in this car. I also brought home two new sons in the car as well. I will be sad to (finally) sell the lemon.
Pros
In the beginning I was very pleased with my Suzuki. One of the best things about my new-to-me car was that it was a relatively cheap investment for me. So cheap in fact I was able to pay for the car in cash from my savings and insurance pay out. Also, for my small family at the time the five seater vehicle left enough room for all us, plus a few more! With my new extra seating I was also able to start shuttling my new daughter and her friends around town. This was a big deal for me as it was something I never thought I would have said even a month ago! Another one of the big perks of... (more)
Cons
I became very frustrated with my Suzuki almost the day after I drove it off the lot. On day two of ownership of my new family friendly wagon the radio fritzed out and needed complete replacing. The second week the cruise control stopped working. Two days later the headlight burned out for the second time... in one week. I became so frustrated by all the issues that I called the dealership within three weeks of purchase and threatened to return the vehicle. I believe my exact words were “nothing on this car works” to the manager. I brought the car into the dealership with the hopes th... (more)
2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara - Favorite vehicle
I bought the Suzuki Grand Vitara in 2000. I was moving to Colorado and wanted a vehicle that would allow me to go explore the wilderness. I wanted four-wheel drive so I could extricate myself from any tight spots I might get into in the mountains. I've had the vehicle for 18 years and have loved it. It's a power horse that keeps going. More than once I've been two tracking and had to turn around. The tight turn radius is great for those narrow dirt roads. That it has a higher clearance than a car has allowed me to cross streams and clear rocky roads. The size is perfect for me. Its compactness has allowed me to squeeze by wider vehicles, I might meet while out in the wilds. Other than some weird things that happened early on in owning the car which were covered by the warranty (the ign... (more)
Story
A friend and I had gone out into the wilds to capture pictures of autumn, and we ran into winter instead. At one point I pulled over to the side of the road, and I got stuck. But not because the snow was deep. What I didn't know is it was especially cold where we were, and the warmth of the tires unfroze the snow which then immediately froze again around the wheels. Luckily a kind stranger cam... (more)
Pros
Cruise control. The back seats can be lowered flat, giving more cargo space. Full-size spare tire. High ceiling. Intermittent wipers.
Cons
Control for high beams is on the turn signal lever, and my arms are too short to comfortably keep one fingers on it and still grasp the steering wheel. Cannot turn off lights if the car is running, which means if you are parked, you can either run the heat/air conditioner OR have the lights off. The paint job did not hold up well. No cup holders for the rear seats.
2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara - Xport is great
The xport is somewhat stylish, very capable small SUV. It has great ground height, awd, and plenty of cargo space.
Story
Driving the SUV on the beach. I used it as a tent and spent the night out on the Gulf Coast.
Pros
Great four-wheel drive, power everything. I really enjoy the keyless start and touch to unlock buttons on the outside of the SUV. Never been stuck in rain, snow, or ice. This thing is a tank when it comes to traveling and dependable. Very comfortable ride. Lots of plugs to power all the toys. Very nicely placed gauge cluster, everything is easy to read and well lit in the evenings. Auto headlights are a nice addition as well. Radio from the factory is a six disk changer. It also plays mp3 files directly from CDs. The xport did come loaded with all of the upgrades except the leather seats a... (more)
Cons
Price was a little high, could be more stylish. It is a little boxy. Hard to find someone to work on the SUV as Suzuki no longer sells cars in America. The engine is powerful, but feels a little sluggish at times. Aftermarket parts are pretty nonexistent in the US. There are a lot that can be ordered from overseas though as long as you do not mind waiting. Color selection could have been a bit greater. Engine noise is a bit of drag as at high speeds it can get a little loud on the highway.
