Toyota Matrix Owner Ratings & Reviews

2010 Toyota Matrix - Roomy, reliable and really noisy.
Although this vehicle appears small from the outside, its interior is surprisingly roomy. There is plenty of space to sit upright in both the front and back seats. Additionally, the rear storage area is large enough to accommodate bags for four people. After several years of ownership, I have only needed to perform basic maintenance such as oil, tire, and filter changes. Unfortunately, during long trips the seat can become uncomfortable while the drum of the road noise becomes grating.
Story
When I moved across town, I was able to stuff a full-sized foam mattress into the back of the car and creep along the road with the back hatch tied down.
Pros
I bought this car because I know Toyota vehicles in general are very reliable. This one in particular stands out as one of the most consistently dependable vehicles produced by that company in the last few years. I also do most of the basic maintenance myself and the organization and position of the various parts for this car make oil changes and brake inspections fairly easy. The rear seats fold flat and create ample room for transporting rather large items. That same space can be used to lay down for a nap, if you are ever in a pinch.
Cons
The engine in this car has only four cylinders. This can make getting up to highway speeds a bit of an issue, as the vehicle struggles to catch up to traffic. Also, the gas mileage is a respectable 30 mpg on average, but given the size of the vehicle and small engine seems underwhelming. After sitting in the driver seat for more than 3 hours, I start to feel a sharp pain in my legs. There is also the sound of noise from the road which continually seeps into the cabin and can make long trips unpleasant.
2009 Toyota Matrix - Don't buy a Matrix.
The Toyota Matrix we own has a wonderful engine. It has never once broken down or given us any trouble in that regard. However, we do not like quite a few cosmetic/usage related things about it.
Story
My husband (then he was my boyfriend) and I drove it to Florida from North Carolina on our first road trip together.
Pros
Our Toyota Matrix has an excellent engine. It has never given us any trouble or broken down.
Cons
It is incredibly difficult to see behind you when backing up due to the very small windows toward the back -- it is a hatchback. Quite a few things are breaking recently -- the seatbelt adjuster, the glove compartment, and the bumper continuously falls down, and we have to kick it back in.
