The Ford Focus attracted me most due to its economical starting price tag and decent fuel economy. I purchased the vehicle just before beginning law school and wanted something that would be reliable, get good gas mileage and not need costly repairs during a period where I wasn't working more than part-time. For a 4 cylinder vehicle, my Focus could get up to 70+ MPH in a hurry. I drove from Minnesota to California in the vehicle and never questioned my ability to do so. The interior, stereo system and trim were fairly basic. This was a no frills vehicle for a no frills period in my life.
Story
3 people crammed all of their luggage, music and snacks in the Focus for a week long drive from Minnesota to California and back.
Pros
Good acceleration - very drivable in heavy metropolitan traffic Good passenger capacity - seats 4 adults comfortably Good gas mileage
Cons
Some of the early 2001 models had a mechanical defect in the engine that caused engine implosion - my Focus happened to be one of them

Before purchasing the car, I rented several. The Ford Focus stood out to me as the best car to drive in terms of handing, ease of parking and maneuvering in general. It wasn't too bad on gas mileage, though doesn't get the 25 mpg with either highway or city driving the dealer had advertised. Nevertheless, it's a great car. The only major thing that went wrong with it is one time it stopped altogether at an intersection. It turns out it needed a fuel pump. However, this was after I had deviated from the owner's manual which instructed not to put ANY additives in the fuel line, just fuel. I had gone to a quick oil change place where the slick salesperson said the additive was included in what I paid, so I may as well use it. Interestingly, once at an actual Ford dealer when getting the o... (more)
Story
I noticed I was pictured on Google street map while coming out of my driveway! It was great to see myself the way other people who view Googled would see me!
Pros
A great handling car for the money. It's simple to drive, the seats are ergonomic, it is small enough to fit into tight parking spaces and is reasonably good with gas mileage. If one follows the maintenance schedule, the car will last well over 100,000 miles. Mine is currently nearing 120,000.
Cons
It is small on the highway compared to most vehicles which seem like nearly all SUVs. Also, it doesn't have the acceleration of some more expensive brands such as mustang or camaro, both of what I've owned before. It did require a new fuel pump.
