The Jeep Patriot was very affordable for my wife and I as we graduated college just a year ago and are just now getting solidified in our full-time jobs. We got an incredible value for the amount of "bells and whistles" and reliable vehicle we got. It is the perfect size for us to enjoy road trips just the two of us as well as be very handy when we decide we want our family to grow. Not to mention it is a very good looking car in the maroon we got.
Story
My best friend and I took a 1200 mile trip in two days to go camping, visit Salt Lake City, and then catch the Eclipse on the way back. It was a blast, and the Patriot performed like a champ.
Pros
The four cylinder engine is great for around town because I'm not burning through my gas with big v6. It is a very smooth ride because of the bigger wheels on the Latitude edition. The engine probably contributes to this too as it is a very reliable and smooth 4 cylinder. It has a very easy and responsive 4-wheel drive toggle just near the emergency break that makes it easy on camping trips to toggle it on when its needed for the terrain.
Cons
The smaller engine does mean that at freeway speeds, the transmission can sometimes get a little hot when you are at speeds 80+ for long periods of time. The black interior is beautiful but it sure does soak up the heat on a summer day. It is incredibly reliable, but in the event that we do need to fix something, the fact that it's a jeep means that will more than likely cost us a bit more than if we had picked a different brand of vehicle... I think the trade off is probably worth it.
