When I originally bought this car, I was looking for something in a specific price range ($10,000 - $12,000) that wasn't too old and didn't have tons of miles. My Cobalt fit that bill. It has been a reliable vehicle thus far (I have owned it about four years). The only major expense that I've had is replacing the breaks, something that everyone will have to do if they keep a car for long enough. I was recently contacted by Chevy and informed about a recall on my vehicle involving a potentially faulty ignition switch. I haven't personally had any problems with my ignition, but I intend to take my car in as soon as possible to make sure that I am not injured, since apparently other people have been.
Story
Sometimes the Cobalt displays little informative messages on the console. For instance, if the temperature is at freezing or below, it will display "Ice Possible." When the cruise control is activated, it will display "Cruise Engaged." I always imagine that the car is saying those things aloud in a softly feminine voice, and it makes me laugh.
Pros
My favorite things about my car are the surprisingly high quality sound system that came with the vehicle, the surprisingly easy to use cruise control feature, and the roomy trunk. I've only owned much older cars, so I'm also used to needing to change the oil every three months, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I only needed to change the oil when my car informed me (via the dashboard display) that my oil needed changed! I also really appreciate the car's ability to actually estimate how many miles per gallon I am getting.
Cons
Unfortunately, I was surprised to learn that despite the vehicle itself being very affordable, it is actually a lot more expensive to insure the vehicle than it would be to insure other cars. Even different models from the same company and the same year cost much less to insure than the Cobalt. I'm over 30, married, and an incredibly safe driver, and we still pay a few hundred more dollars every 6 months for my vehicle than we do my spouse's. The only explanation that our insurance company could give was that the Cobalt itself wasn't ranked very highly on safety tests. That makes me worry ... (more)

This car, despite being 12 years old, is in spectacular shape--and that speaks to the quality of its manufacture. Before I purchased it, I brought it to my family mechanic to get a second opinion. He was astonished by the car's condition, citing almost no rust on the undercarriage and the value of the vehicle.
Story
In my previous, a beater car, I was pulled over three times for no reason (a likely story, I know, but not once was I ever told I was committing a moving violation)! In this car, the police seem to regard me as a much lower-risk driver almost instinctively. Buicks are just a more mature vehicle.
Pros
Beautiful shell. Smooth drive. Safe! I went off the road in a snow storm, and the car barely sustained a scratch, despite the entire left-hand side of the vehicle being airborne. Incredibly value for the money.
Cons
The cabin of the vehicle can feel a little "older." As a 22 year old, I would love it to be a little more stylish. But that's incredibly minor.
