Despite the stigma and cheap build quality, the Cavalier Z24 has been one of the best cars I've ever owned or known, coming from someone with a mechanic/car hobbyist family that has been surrounded by many cars for my entire life. It's not perfect - the plastic is cheap, most of the car is straight out of the 90s, it's prone to horrific rust, and it's rough around the edges...but it's just right in the places that matter. The car is light on its feet and can throw you back in the seat at only 3k RPMs. It handles beautifully, even when stock. It does NOT break, and if it does, it's extremely minor.
Story
Due to its snappy handling, low proximity to the ground, and light weight, it was tons of fun to do e-brake slides on backroads during the summer.
Pros
Not a bad looking car with the Z24 rims and stock body kit, considering its age. More zippy than you'd expect. Good handling. Despite the bad rap of the 2.4L twin cam, mine is at 205k with original belts and spark plugs and still runs (and LOOKS) brand new. Z24 seats are comfier than a lot of cars I've been in. Sips gas like a lady. Only repairs it has ever needed in 15 years and 205k miles are a window motor and a couple fuses.
Cons
Build quality is cheap and antiquated for a 2000s car, but let's be honest, you can't expect it to be a luxury car. It's not the prettiest thing in the parking lot, but my victory red coupe with full body kit and Z24 rims had me doing guilty-pleasure double takes every time I parked it. Stock suspension is really lacking; you WILL feel every bump in the road. Sound barriers are also lacking, but that's not necessarily a bad thing; if you enjoy feeling your car, it's great. Rust is the only major issue with this car, and it's major. Rarely will you find one that's not disintegrating. Althou... (more)

I've owned GM Cars my whole life. I've owned a Honda, too. The Cavalier is by far my favorite of all. The 2.4L Engine is sporty and fun, punchy on the throttle and doesn't drink much gas. Exterior styling is great. Mild and refined while still sporty...just buy one with a spoiler package. Interior is a little dated, but it at least has a nice padded dash. It has power everything and controls are well laid out and easy to use. My only gripe is that the power window switch is in the center console. Seats are supportive and comfortable on long journeys, and the traction assist and anti-lock brakes are very reassuring in the winter, although cornering is a little bit mushy at high speeds. All in all, this is a fantastic A to B car that drives very well and gets great mileage. I have yet to... (more)
Pros

The salespeople were very helpful and kind. They paid attention to what my husband wanted while also taking me seriously, as I was the one ultimately purchasing the vehicle. We negotiated a great deal and my husband loves his car!
