I have owned my Ford Explorer since 2008, and it has been super reliable. It has third row seats, which I rarely use but when I need the extra seating space, it is great to have. I've moved cross country with it, hauled our dogs around many places, made countless trips to the home improvement store, hauled a myriad of different items, and helped several friends move as well. The interior is holding up great, and the middle/rear seats fold down to give me plenty of hauling space. The only maintenance items I've done are changing the oil regularly, changing the spark plugs once, refill wiper fluid, refill engine coolant, and new tires. I couldn't ask for a better SUV for the last nine years.
Story
On Christmas day seven years ago, we went to pick up my wife's grandmother from her house to take her to a family gathering. It had snowed several feet and the roads were "drive at your own risk." We drove through mounds and piles of snow only to get stuck about a block from her house. It took a ton of snow for us to get stuck. We spent about an hour digging snow out from under the truck, ... (more)
Pros
Very low maintenance. Very reliable. Middle/rear seats fold down for hauling things. Capability to tow trailers and boats.
Cons
Not the greatest on gas mileage (it's an SUV so what do you expect?). Paint on the roof luggage rack is chipping.

2006 Ford Explorer - A great family vehicle.

The 2006 Ford Explorer has been a very smart purchase for myself and my family. While lacking in a few of the more luxurious features, it is straight forward and has the necessary components for a comfortable and useful vehicle. Let's face it, all those bells an whistles can get quite confusing, so having something effective and with less small parts to break down, is very much a plus. The engine has been getting slightly louder as the years have moved on -- making this SUV sound more like a truck -- making me have to speak up and turn the radio on a little louder, but this is not a deal breaker for me. However, if you are looking for quiet, "can't tell you are even in a car" type vehicle, then this is not the one for you.
Story
My husband and kids camping out in the car while I was in labor with our third child. They folded down both the third and second rows and had enough room to lay down and watch movies.
Pros
The height of the vehicle -- tall without being a monster and enough that I can see over most other cars in traffic. The size also make me feel safer. I enjoy the straight-forward functions and the optional third-row seating, which can convert back and forth from a large trunk space or that extra seating.
Cons
The engine is getting louder. It is missing some features such as Bluetooth and USB ports. There is no way to connect a phone or MP3 player to the stereo.
