2011 Toyota Corolla - Good car, but needs more power

I purchased my car with approximately 600 miles on it, so it was nearly brand new. It rides smoothly, no rattles or bumps. Always gets me to where I need to be. Acceleration is s bit sluggish, but I did not buy it to race. I can easily fit two bicycles in the car - one in the trunk and one in the back seat. The trunk is just the perfect length to fit my scuba tanks. Back seat is large enough for two drooly pups to lay on after playing and the seats are really easy to clean, with no residual smell or spots.
Story
I had some friends come visit to scuba dive with me for 10 days. My car held 5 people, 5 sets of scuba gear (on a roof rack), and 5 heavy scuba tanks. It ran perfectly and we all had a great trip.
Pros
The car handles really well. I've driven it in hurricane-force wind and rain and it drove perfectly. Seats are comfortable. Passenger seat lays down nearly vertical and is good for napping. My trunk liner has held up surprisingly well against having sporting gear drug across it countless times.
Cons
Had to have the brakes redone twice now due to defects. Once was when the car had maybe 15,000 miles on it and the second time was just before the warranty expired. When stopping, it would make this weird almost dull pulsating noise, not like metal on metal, just really weird. The brakes still do it occasionally. Also the trunk lock sticks and does not usually open with the key. The button on the remote works, but the lock sticks and won't open at all with the key inserted one way and opens about 50% if the time when I turn the key over.

2014 Toyota Corolla - No balls, good mileage.

The new Corollas leave much to be desired in the way of acceleration, speed and overall engine performance. When in comes to fuel mileage, however, I will confess that the Corolla is close to top shelf. I often find myself looking at the fuel gauge wondering when the last time I filled up was and being unsure because it was so long ago. The back-up camera is also very handy, as well. It saves a lot of time looking over the shoulders and checking all the mirrors (which I still do, just spend less time doing it). It takes away a lot of blind spots. The touchscreen dash display overall is a very convenient and innovative addition to the consumer vehicle. If I could sum up the Corolla on a 5-star basis, I would give it a 2.7. While the MPG does give it some credibility to me, I really d... (more)
Pros
My favorite feature of the 2014 Toyota Corolla was the Eco Boost, I guess. Saved a lot of money in gas. The MPG was pretty high. Averaged ~32-38 on the freeway. Smooth ride, as well.
Cons
Weak/unimpressive engine. The little 4-cylinder struggles a lot and has little acceleration.
