2005 Mazda MPV - Not your Average 'Mom Van'
I truly love my Mazda MPV. It's fun to drive, really reliable, comfortable, and a lot more attractive looking than most minivans. It feels more like a crossover than a soccer mom van. We love that it's trim looking but seats seven, and we appreciate having a roof rack. The car drives really well and handles great even for a larger vehicle. We are also pleased with the gas mileage. Minivans tend to not be as efficient and we are pleased with the fuel economy of the MPV. We really have had no major problems with it even though we've put on almost 100,000 miles in the three years we've owned it. We drive a lot for our work and for fun, so it's really important for us to have a reliable, easy to maintain, and safe car for our family and for our stuff.
Historia
We were trying to go camping and our tent had a giant hole in it so we needed somewhere to camp. We took the seats out of the van and tossed them in the front seats, and folded down the rear row of seats and all camped on the floor of the van. It actually was awesome!
A Favor
One of my FAVORITE things is that the rear windows ROLL DOWN!!! That is so cool. Usually this doesn't work on minivans, and we love this feature. It was actually one of the things that sold us on this van. The Air Conditioning works great, the stereo works great, and there are a good amount of cup holders. We love that we can take all the seats out easily if we have to haul things. Overall, the price was great, too.
En Contra
There are very few things I dislike about this van. The only two that I can think of are that the trunk space is not great if all the seats are up and that the air conditioning doesn't go all the way in the rear, which kind of sucks when it's hot out and you have kids in the back seats. They have to open all the windows which ruins the efficiency of the air conditioning in the front, and therefore the gas mileage, but really that's it. I love this van and feel that we made an excellent choice in purchasing it.
2003 Mazda MPV - Great family car that was probably much better new.
I like the size and style of the Mazda MPV. My family fit very well in it. The third row seating came in handy many times. The cargo space was great for hauling sports gear and camping equipment. It was never easy for me to transform the back from seating to cargo space. The headrests had to be removed, and they didn't come out easily. There were two different handles to pull to get the seat to fold over then drop down into the space. I can't even remember exactly what it took to put the seats back up. The seats were very comfortable. Some of the most comfortable car seats I can remember. The visibility was good with lots of big windows. The MPV was used when we got it and needed catch-up maintenance, including power steering flush, transmission flush, alignment, windshield ... (more)
Historia
We spent one pouring-down rain night at a campground that was already muddy and soaked from previous rains. The ground and tent bottom were soaked so we all slept in the MPV.
A Favor
I like the size and shape of the MPV. It looks good. Not showy but simple and nice. The space inside was just right for my family. Plenty of headroom. The two captain seats in the front and the two captain seats in the second row were very comfortable. The third row seating was roomy and convenient. Our big dog crate fit in the cargo space with room to spare when the third row seat was stored. We were also easily able to haul camping gear and sports equipment.
En Contra
There were more immediate and arising maintenance and repair issues than we would have expected even from a used car, and that decreased my happiness with the MPV. It was difficult for me to store and retrieve the third row seating. Maneuvering backward seemed awkward to me, but I'm not sure if that was because of the MPV or because of me.
2002 Mazda MPV -
I love this van. It is large enough that I was able to pack all my stuff in it (and on the roof rack) and move across the country, but it handles like a much smaller car. It has a great turn radius for a vehicle of this size. In addition to cargo space, it is great for driving around groups of people. I have used it to drive seven adults, including several men over 6 ft., to the mountains and around Asheville for a weekend. There is enough headroom that my boyfriend, who is 6'5", is able to sit comfortably in all seats of the van. I have had to do very little maintenance, other than routine things, and the car has about 150,000+ miles on it. It has held up incredibly well. When I have had issues with it, the parts are common enough that it has not taken too much time to get it fixed. I... (more)

It was late one night, and I was driving home after having dinner at a friend's house, and I had the overwhelming urge to drive to the beach. So I came home, packed a bag with enough stuff for a day trip and some food, took the middle row of seats out of the van, threw my twin mattress in the back, grabbed some coffee, and off I went. After a three-hour drive by myself with the windows down an... (more)
A Favor
The internal space and comfort of the van is wonderful. Even after 15 years, not many other vans compare. I love how the seats are stored; the back row folds down into the bed of the car to create a continuous flat space, and I can take the middle row of seats out if I need the space. The middle seats are on two tracks so that the can be two individual bucket seats or a bench seat.
En Contra
One of the dashboard lights has gone out, which means that at night I can't see mileage, etc. and it is super expensive to fix because there is no easy access. The gas mileage isn't great, but that's to be expected with an older van.
