My Kia has been a fantastic car in terms of reliability and driving ease. I have had the car for a long time, and it has well over 200,000 miles on it at this time, and it still rarely has maintenance problems. It does burn a little oil, but that is expected of older cars. I am glad that the engine keeps running well even though the floor mats have been completely worn through. While the car rattles a lot, the rattles are limited to the trim rather than anything mechanical. I can tolerate a little rattling, even if it means I have to turn the radio up pretty loud. We are starting to wear through the seat covers, and we had to get new covers for the seats. I do get a little annoyed when using the trunk as the hydraulics do not work to keep it open. Someone has to physically hold... (more)
Story
Shortly after starting my job, a member of management started to comment on my vehicle to try to encourage me to get a better car. I pointed out that this car was paid off, and I would gladly get a new car if they would provide me a raise so I could afford a newer car. I did not get the new car, but I also did not lose my job.
Pros
The cars is just so reliable. We put very little money into maintenance other than oil changes and tires. This makes the car very cheap to maintain and continue driving.
Cons
As this is an older car, there are a lot of cosmetic deficiencies such as the trim rattling, loud cab noise on the freeway, and problems with the trunk and popping the hood.

The 2002 Kia Spectra is the third car I have owned and is absolutely my favorite. I don't feel like I'm driving a land yacht or a tank but a smooth little flying carpet with excellent storage space. I've recently been confined to a wheelchair, so I've been able to experience the passenger side and back seat of the car as well. It's just as soothing a ride.
Story
Recently, my caregiver had to take his wife and adult daughter to doctor's appointments at the same time he had to take me to one. Driving down the road, his wife and daughter were discussing hair styles, while he and I squabbled about something. I don't even remember what anymore. Suddenly, it was quiet in the back seat. Then his wife said, "Y'all bicker like an old married couple!"
Pros
One of the best features of the Spectra is the gas mileage. Now, the specs will tell you that it gets 24 mpg city and 32 highway. But with my caregiver behind the wheel, I don't know how he does it, but he gets upwards of 40 mpg highway. I'd ask him what his secrets are, but then he'd have to kill me. Another fantastic feature is the storage. My wheelchair easily fits in the trunk. Recently, my caregiver had to take his son his bicycle; the back seats folded down quite easily.
Cons
The one thing I don't like about my Spectra is the personal space. I am not a small person; I sometimes feel a little cramped in both the passenger seat and the back seat. Up front, I need to push my seat all the way back to feel like I have enough leg room. I'm only 5'2", but it's mostly legs. And I'm wide enough in the hips that sometimes the seat belt buckle is digging in a little bit. I will say this, though: it's still comfortable enough for me to have a good long nap going down the road. Or parked in the driveway!
