Old trusty. I put over a hundred and fifty thousand miles on this car. I've owned this car over 10 years. I've never had another car last this long. I've taken this through mud, snow, up mountains, down valleys, through forests and deserts all across the entire Western United States. It's big enough to haul anything you want. But also small enough that with all-wheel drive it still gets decent gas mileage. I've never gotten this car stuck and that's a first. I've even been able to drive this car on beaches. Overall it's probably the best car I've ever owned but it does require a head gasket replacement. The newer model Subarus just weren't built to last like this one was.
Story
Went on a road that ended up in sand. Decided just to go for it as I had AAA towing service paid for. Ended up being able to go all the way to the beach and tool around on the beach for a couple miles camp on the beach and then get out without ever getting stuck, which is pretty impressive for a low horsepower all-wheel drive car with road tires.
Pros
All-wheel drive will get you through mud to the certain extent. Snow as long as it's not too deep. Sand as long as it's not too deep. But it's also good on highways and long drives across different states. Does good in freezing weather and miserable heat like you get in the desert. It's small but the station wagon hatchback configuration enables it to halt enough stuff to really camp for long periods. The included roof rack allows easy installation of the top box, which increases this hauling capacity enough to make this car very formidable for long trips. The smooth shifting automatic tra... Cons
These early model Subarus all had faulty head gaskets. Being out of warranty requires payment out of pocket, which is quite expensive. If I didn't love the car so much, I never would have replaced it because the price of the fix was more send these things are worth on blue book value. This is not something most people would do. It's not very cost-effective, but since fixing that head gasket, I've gotten eight years of flawless operation.

I bought this car about five years ago - it was at the time a ten year old car with only 63,000 miles on it, as it had been driven very gently. It had a few dings and scratches so I was a little suspicious. I had never owned a Japanese car before, so I felt like I was taking a slight risk in purchasing it, but it was affordable and I had heard many stories about Subaru's amazing reliability. As it turns out, it's the best car I've ever owned. I've taken it on multiple 400+ mile road trips with never a problem. All it needs are regular oil and fluid changes to keep it in top shape. I have had to replace a few parts on the underbody, but being a 15 year old vehicle that has to deal with salt-filled winters (the winters are terrible where I live and salt is needed for the roads) it's und... Pros
The all wheel drive system is very safe and balanced. There is a ton of cargo room. I love how comfortable it is to drive.
Cons
The seals around the door can occasionally come loose, resulting in loud road noise. The read window wiper doesn't work as well as it should.
