I bought this car about five years ago - it was at the time a ten year old car with only 63,000 miles on it, as it had been driven very gently. It had a few dings and scratches so I was a little suspicious. I had never owned a Japanese car before, so I felt like I was taking a slight risk in purchasing it, but it was affordable and I had heard many stories about Subaru's amazing reliability. As it turns out, it's the best car I've ever owned. I've taken it on multiple 400+ mile road trips with never a problem. All it needs are regular oil and fluid changes to keep it in top shape. I have had to replace a few parts on the underbody, but being a 15 year old vehicle that has to deal with salt-filled winters (the winters are terrible where I live and salt is needed for the roads) it's und... Pros
The all wheel drive system is very safe and balanced. There is a ton of cargo room. I love how comfortable it is to drive.
Cons
The seals around the door can occasionally come loose, resulting in loud road noise. The read window wiper doesn't work as well as it should.

I bought this vehicle as a high mileage vehicle after selling my 2006 Dodge Charger. It rates very close to a Jeep Cherokee Classic in the way it drives and the weight of the vehicle.
Story
I have drove it to work in ice and snow several times and have not had any majore issues just some small slipping on thick ice.
Pros
Two of the things that really attracted me to the vehicle were that it is light weight and all wheel drive. It does not abuse tires the way my heaver Dodge Charger did. The car is easy to maintain and it has been durable as I have put over 50k miles on it sense owning it. I feel like I have defiantly gotten my money worth out of the vehicle. I enjoy the heated seats and moon roof very much. Overall, the maintenance and tires have not been very expensive. I have read of some Subarus form those years having more severe problems. I do not know if they where fixed before I purchased or ... (more)
Cons
I have read some reviews of the 2001 Subaru Forester having problems with head gasket seals going bad. I am having to replace the catalytic converter in the vehicle. I am not sure how common this is in other vehicles, but I have read it is somewhat common in this model Subaru.
