2009 Subaru Forester - It has been reliable since I got it 7 years ago.

It has never broken down or done anything that it shouldn't have - it is reliable! It's sure-footed on ice, and handles snow very well. It's just about the perfect size - neither too large nor too small. The gas mileage is pretty good, but not what it was when it was new. It's about 100 thousand miles now.
Story
So here's what happens - every October I buy an extension cord so I can plug the block heater in during the winter, and every August my husband steals the extension cord for his smokers to smoke his fish, and it disappears. We've been doing this for over 20 years, until I bought this Subaru, which has a hidden compartment in back. He can't steal my extension cord now!
Pros
I love the AWD - much better than front-wheel or 4-wheel drive; very secure. It's comfortable to drive, and visibility all around is good; you can see behind you. There are plenty of airbags and it feels pretty safe to drive. I like the tire pressure sensors that let me know if the tires are soft. The outside temperature display is very handy (if sometime a couple of degrees off), as is the Trip-A and Trip-B mileage indicator (even though only on displays at a time).
Cons
I call the color ubiquitous grey, because it's pretty common. Sometimes the steering wheel locks, and you have to jerk it back and forth in order to get the key to turn. Some of the security features are annoying - just try to unlock the door using the key instead of the fob, the alarm will go off (and yes, there is a way to disable it, but it's not easy to figure out). And extra keys are expensive and cannot be found locally. Oh, and the worst feature is the emission system/check engine. Here's what it does - if you fail to put the gas cap back on securely it triggers the emission system,... (more)

I love the size and feel of this vehicle. It's a small SUV so it doesn't feel overwhelming to drive, but it's nice to be elevated more than a sedan. It fits lots of gear or people comfortably and is know for its safety features, which I appreciate. However, I've been disappointed with the number of repairs it has needed after only 65,000 miles and six years of ownership.
Story
It's not fun, but it's memorable! I live in Minnesota and had my car parked outside a large building one winter. When I went out to my car a few hours later, there was a huge dent in the hood. An enormous chunk of ice had fallen off the building and smashed into my car, leaving traces of ice all around it. Needless to say, that wasn't a fun surprise!
Pros
There's plenty of storage room and the back seats fold down, which is great for hauling. The size is perfect - not too big and not too small. It's sporty and fun, but not too flashy. The seats are comfortable, even for longer trips. The price point and resale value are great. I'm glad it has side airbags and I definitely feel like the safety features are high quality. It also has great visibility - I don't feel like there are a lot of blind spots.
Cons
It has not been nearly as reliable as I hoped. I've had many mechanical issues that are unusual for only 65,000 miles, including spark plug replacement, AC replacement, transmission fluid line rusting and leaking, gasket replacement and more. I've spent a lot of money on repairs that I was not expecting, based on how reliable Subarus are supposed to be. Additionally, the gas mileage is not great. I get about 21 miles per gallon on average, which is less than I thought it would be when I purchased. I purchased a basic version, so there's nothing special about the features inside.
