Toyota Highlander is one of the best mid-size car-based SUVs on the market. The Highlander offers space, versatility and other benefits of larger SUVs combined with car-like handling, smooth ride and reasonable gas mileage. The Highlander is proven to be reliable if maintained properly. I just bought it to drive back and forth to and from work. Great fuel economy and good performance. The car is very fun to drive, and I love having the four-wheel drive.
Story
Using it to take my girlfriend to the hospital when she was about to give birth to my child. Rush hour speed.
Pros
The 2001 Highlander offers good handling and soft, quiet ride. On the road, the Highlander feels very stable. High driving position, wide rear glass and large side mirrors provide excellent all-around visibility. Front seats are comfy and supportive. There is plenty of headroom. The second row space is sufficient. The 60/40 split second-row seat reclines and slides back and forth. The steering is light. The soft suspension absorbs road bumps and pot holes very well. The V6 engine is silky-smooth and responsive
Cons
The steering wheel tilts, but lacks telescopic adjustment. No third row, available unlike more recent versions. Second- and third-row seats fold almost flat. Liftgate glass doesn't open separately, no telescopic adjustment for the steering wheel

The Toyota Highlander is big enough to meet your need for a big car that carries stuff, kids, anything a family needs. But it is also a very comfortable ride and easy to drive. It does not have that "truck" ride or feel that many SUVs have. I use it to carry groceries and garden equipment. I took my son and his friends to games and practices with all their sports equipment in the back. When he started a band that lasted through middle and high school, I used it to haul them and their speakers, amps, guitars, drums to their various gigs. After sixteen years, it is still going strong and is still a very comfortable car to ride in and easy to drive. Of all the cars I have owned, it is my favorite, and I hate to see it getting older and realize I will have to replace it. I would re... (more)
Story
Taking my son and his band to gigs with piles of music equipment filling the back.
Pros
Reliable, comfortable, and easy to drive for a big car.
Cons
Doesn't have screen to see behind you.

They really worked with me to make sure that I got a car that I was comfortable with at a price I could afford. I came in and told them what I could afford and they did everything they could to work with me. No sleazy sales tactics here!

The salesman seemed sincere and really listened. He did not try to sell us a more expensive car than what we wanted. He didn't try to get us to buy a car that was fully-loaded, but recognized our price limit and respected it.
