While overall a solid, reliable vehicle, my Toyota Matrix has been a mixed bag for me. The gas mileage is good, but it's not a lot of fun to drive. On a windy day, you might as well have a mast and a sail, since it's so boxy and tends to get blown around. Driving in the snow is not for the faint at heart either. As an average height woman, I find the visibility isn't so great, and I don't feel that it "fits" me very well. I never feel quite at ease. Whatever fabric they used on the interior has a rough texture, and everything from lint and crumbs to pet hair sticks tenaciously to it. It's a great size for your dogs to ride in, but cleaning up the hair afterward is torturous. Same goes for the carpeting -- good luck getting tiny pebbles out of it. The cargo space is nice, and the nettin... (more)
Story
I and my teenage cousin once spent over an hour trapped in my Matrix at twilight because there appeared to be bats flying all around outside. Every time we thought it was clear, there was another fly-by close to the car. The next day, we realized it had just been birds. That was a few years ago, and we will forever laugh about it.
Pros
Good gas mileage. Reliable. Cargo space. Fold down front passenger seat. Cargo netting.
Cons
Boxy, not pleasurable to drive. Poor handling. Poor visibility. Interior upholstery is atrocious.

I purchased the 2008 Toyota Matrix as a means for transportation to and from work. I lived in Connecticut at the time and my commute took me to White Plains, New York. My drive was a 40 minute trip each way and I wanted something that was good on fuel, sporty to drive and with enough space to work out of. This car offered it all. My greatest praise I could give the car was my ability to pack an entire LAN party's worth of equipment including multiple servers, numerous totes full of cabling and switching equipment. The engine was powerful enough to handle a lot of weight and not feel weighed down. It rode smoothly so that things wouldn't be jolted around in the storage area, while remaining firm enough of a ride to be fun. There are a lot of options for seating and there is plenty of le... Story
I loved driving this car on back roads. Loads of pep and fun to take out on windy back roads.
Pros
Fun to drive. Plenty of space. Great on fuel. Decent stock stereo system.
Cons
Different seating position can take a little to get used to. Not the best looking car in the world. Instrument panel felt cheap. Lack of options for upgrades.
