2006 Toyota Corolla - Nine Years of Headache Free Ownership

My 2006 Toyota Corolla has provided me with over nine years of headache free ownership. I have driven my Corolla cross-country twice, as well as back and forth between Pennsylvania and Southern Virginia several times and have yet to encounter a significant problem. I have never owned a vehicle that required so little maintenance, and so few expenses. Over the nine years I have had this car, the most expensive issue I have had is when I had to purchase four new tires at one time. Other than that, the issues have been small and have not caused me significant financial strain. There are over 140,000 miles on my car now, it is still running perfectly, and I hope to get a few more years out of it!
Story
I drove from Pennsylvania to Arizona with my parents when I accepted my first teaching position. We took four days to drive cross-country, and saw a ton of beautiful sites. My little Corolla pulled a U-Haul the entire way there, and even up through the mountains in Colorado. I was impressed with it's pulling power, and I still have the hitch on the back of my car!
Pros
My favorite thing about my Corolla is the fact that I have not had to deal with any hugely expensive problems with it. My last car had its transmission go out which cost me over $800 for that, as well as several other issues which cost over $200 at a time. The only time I have had to spend over $200 on my Corolla was when I was preparing to drive from Arizona to Pennsylvania, and had to replace all four tires and a fan belt. Other than that, any issue I have had has been financially doable. I also love that it is a safe vehicle, and as a mother of 3 year old twins this is very important to... (more)
Cons
The only negative thing I have to say about the Toyota Corolla is that it is not sporty looking at all. I was used to my 1996 Acura Integra, which was incredibly sporty but caused me a ton of issues and cost me a ton of money! The 2006 model Corolla is definitely what I would consider a family car, and definitely will not make someone stop and take a second look if they saw it on the street. However, what it lacks in flashy looks, it more than makes up for in performance. Also, if you're looking for a car with a lot of power this is not the one for you. I was able to pull a U-Haul cross-co... (more)

2009 Toyota Corolla - One of the best decisions I have ever made.

When my old car kicked the bucket, I asked all the ex-mechanics at work which car they would enjoy fixing if they absolutely had to. Their responses were all the same: "Toyota Corolla, the older the better." They had many reasons but the ones that really got me were the overall reliability and ease of obtaining repair parts. I went down to the dealership to test drive one and check it out under the hood. I was very impressed by the nearly silent engine, among other things, so I bought a 2009 Corolla LE with a loan obtained from my bank that same day.
Story
There is another person in town with the same car as mine, down to the color and model year. I would see them in traffic every so often and before too long I realized that it was always the same driver. One day, I was finally next to my car's twin at a red light, so I rolled down my passenger side window and motioned to the driver that they should roll theirs down too. She did, at which point ... Pros
My favorite features are the factory original teal paint and the digital MPG read out, but that's not why I chose this vehicle. When I looked under the hood, the first thing that struck me was how roomy the engine compartment was. I felt like if I wanted to, I could sit on the edge of the engine compartment above the radiator and dangle my legs freely about the inside whilst leisurely changing spark plugs or topping off fluids. I was able to reach through the various engine components, from the front all the way to the firewall without having to take apart a single piece. When I checked ou... (more)
Cons
There aren't very many bad things about this car, but if I had to complain about anything I'd have to say that it is impossible to set the dashboard clock. I've tried every button I could think of and that bad boy is still set to the wrong time and probably always will be. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the beige interior, that is WAY too easy to stain, I put on seat covers, but they only work so well against potential damage. There's also a little storage compartment to the left of the steering wheel which is absolutely useless as the latch to hold it shut is very flimsy.

2006 Toyota Corolla - Good car but doesn't feel stable or safe

The car is good and reliable so it will get you places without worrying too much if it will break in the middle. The trunk has enough space for all my needs and the back seat even folds down, even though I've never had to use this feature yet. I never feel like I need to manage the stuff I put in the trunk, I can just keep it there and if I need to add something like when going to shopping trip I know it will still fit everything. The problem is that it feels very light so when driving at high speed on the highway you feel like it is not very stable and jump up and down a lot and doesn't give you strong feeling on control on bumpy roads at high speed or when it is raining. When you open the door and sit in it the body feels light which make you worried if it will perform well in a cras... (more)
Story
One day we parked beside another car that look just like ours in a nearby supermarket parking lot, when we came back we went to the wrong car even though we know that we parked beside a similar one, we still didn't manage to know which one is ours when we went back. Had a nice laugh out of it.
Pros
Reliability, feeling that it won't break down as often as other models that are 10 years old is a good thing. I like also that the back seats can fold down so I can fit large items in case I need that when shopping at Ikea or something.
Cons
The car feels so light and not stable at high speed, so I feel like the car can twist or need a lot of effort to make sure that it stays in its lane on rainy days on the highway.
