Volkswagen Jetta Owner Ratings & Reviews

2001 Volkswagen Jetta - Probably great when new.
I loved my car the first time I saw it. I bought it on EBay, and when the listing was taken down I was sad that I hadn't bought it, and that's how I knew it was the car I should buy. I have had it for about 10 years. I really like the cup holders, which come out of the center console with a push-button. I really like the interior lights as well because they are red and blue instead of normal light colors. I love the seat-warmer, and have it on all winter. I really like how my car will go when I tell it to and that's making buying a new car difficult. Most cars when you put your foot on the gas it takes time to really get up to speed, but mine is immediate and it's great. However my car is also old now and isn't always as reliable as it should be. I've had issues for years with various ... (more)
Story
One of my parents lives at the top of a big hill, which my car can climb effortlessly. I had a friend in my car going to my parents' and my friend was really impressed with the way my car shot up the hill. Made me feel like my choice of car was validated.
Pros
Nice motor/transmission that goes when you tell it to, good cup holders that somehow haven't broken, nice seat warmers, roomy interior, interior lights.
Cons
The way it's designed to be difficult to repair, the cheapness of any plastic parts or otherwise interior bits, how fragile the parts are but that could be because it's so old now also.
1985 Volkswagen Jetta -
The Jetta I purchased new way back in 1985. It was a gold 4 door Jetta with cloth bucket seats in the front, Automatic with power windows and a sun roof. The sun roof was opened and closed with a crank. Air Conditioning was also included. It was not a diesel and it took regular gas. The styling of the car was what attracted me to purchase it. It had those rectangular headlights! It was fun to drive, a little underpowered but the handling was superb. It was stiff and responsive which I liked. I called it my poor man's BMW.
Story
I remember taking my daughter home from the hospital after she was born. The car seat was put in the back and it fit perfectly. My wife and I, along with my daughter, went on camping trips and to Big Bend in it.
Pros
The Jetta was fun to drive. You could hear the engine as you drove it down the highway. It had a nice hum. The suspension was stiff and the responsiveness of the steering was excellent. The styling on the inside was well designed. It had power windows and the buttons were on the console underneath the radio. The sound system was great - speakers were in the door. The car was very roomy.
Cons
It had some reliability issues (although back in the 1980s cars were not as reliable as they are now.) I had it for about 10 years and, during that time, the power windows on both the drivers and the passenger side went out, I had to replace the heater core and the radiator. It was not that difficult to maintain, however. I did most of the maintenance on the vehicle. I bought a factory manual for the vehicle and it was really clear as to how to make repairs.
