I am overall happy with my purchase of a 2006 VW Tourareg.
Story
I have an amusing memory of moving my son back to college with all his belongings. He's not a kid to under pack. He sat in the back seat with half the seat folded down to accommodate his belongings, and he did it for 14 hours. Items kept falling onto his lap. Fortunately he had a good sense of humor.
Pros
My favorite feature of the vehicle is that it has the feel of a luxury SUV. I can carry a lot of cargo without sacrificing the high end features. I previously owned a Land Rover and it drove like a truck in comparison to the Tourareg. As the parent of a college student I use it often to move him back and forth from school and I've never been disappointed with the cargo space. The luxury aspects of the SUV include upgraded wheels and leather seats.
Cons
There are a few definite problems with this car. The main issue is regarding gas mileage. At best I only get 15mpg so it can be very expensive to operate. The other problem is with the frequent problems I've had with the windshield wiper motor. It seems to be fragile and breaks easily, especially during the long winters in the Northeast. I've gone through three windshield wiper motors so far and at $500 per pop it has become quite expensive to maintain. A minor problem is that I had a trailer hitch added by the dealer. It is a genuine VW system but it's failed twice on me and at the most i... (more)

The VW Touareg could easily be the best vehicle I've owned. I love how it drives, it's reliable, and it's great for all weather. There is plenty of room for kids, groceries, dogs, even wine barrels. But costs are prohibitive.
Story
I remember running over a tree in the middle of the night. Right over a madrone and not a single problem beyond needing to get it realigned. I went over a tree after all.
Pros
The Porsche brakes stop on a dime. I have absolutely no fear of my 4,000lb vehicle not stopping when I want it to. The car is reliable, handles better than any other large SUV I've driven, and is comfortable. It is said to be the VW version of the Porsche Cayenne, and you can tell by the way it drives. Overall, despite the costs, we still refuse to trade it in or consider alternatives. So if you're willing to endure the costs, update a few items to aftermarket, I highly recommend the Touareg.
Cons
Unfortunately, at least for the year I purchased, it is a very expensive vehicle to maintain. It is 12 years old now with about 120,000 miles, and it has had the drive train replaced twice. I was told to custom order a custom piece or I would have to continue to change it every 60-80K miles. So I did. While the brakes are great, they also cost $1,200-$2,000 to replace every couple years. If we drove this car more frequently the cost would be prohibitive.

I am actually very impressed with the Touareg in general. It is a great SUV. It has lots of interior space. Plenty of headroom and leg room to fit 4 adults comfortably but I wouldn't consider a long drive if you put a full-size adult in the middle seat. I have the diesel version of the Touareg and that is why it only receives a 3 star rating from me instead of higher. That blame is solely placed on VW as a company. It is all wheel drive and has plenty of torque. I am able to tow a trailer or a boat very comfortably without any issues. The radio that came with my trim package is decent, however I believe that the higher trim radio is definitely better.
Story
Constant story is how comfortable it is driving daily. Its a great car for driving long distances.
Pros
The diesel mileage is great. I am getting around 25 miles to the gallon which turns to about 600 miles a fill up. This is great considering I drive around 3,000 miles a month. With how much time I spend in the vehicle, the drivers seat is amazingly comfortable - the most comfortable out of all the cars I have owned. The heated and cooled seats are a wonderful addition with the leather trim. No burning your behind during hot weather or freezing it in the cold.
Cons
The only major con I have with my vehicle is that it is part of the diesel-gate issue that VW is facing.
