I acquired this car about a year ago. Since I have purchased it, it has been nothing but problems. I loved the acceleration and look of the vehicle as well as the turbo, hence my purchase. It has a small and sleek look which is great and appealed to me since I am younger. But, Volkswagens have always been unreliable. Since getting it, it has broken down twice. I had replaced the headlights and taillights two times each! That's ridiculous for two years. Especially for something as minor as headlights and taillights. I have also replaced interior lights. The check engine light has come on over and over again with no solution, which is also typical for Volkswagens. Well over $1,000 dollars has gone into this car in over a year. The EPC light tends to come on and the car loses all power. T... (more)
Story
When I first purchased the car, the turbo had such a great pull as soon as I took it out of the parking lot that I knew I had to have it! My friend test drove it with me and said, "You NEED this car!"
Pros
The body is sleek and attractive. I love the look of it overall. The sunroof is a great feature and I love that it can go up a little or completely slide for more air. Adding rims to this car makes it look even nicer, which the previous owner had done before me and it has gotten this car so many compliments. It stands out since it is a hatchback and you don't see many of these cars on the road. I also love the power in this car, when its working. The turbo is a nice boost of speed and you can easily get to top speeds on the highway, much faster than cars usually can catch up. The interior ... (more)
Cons
The top negative things were the uncountable issues that this vehicle has had in just under a year! I can't even say it was poor ownership, as I have owned multiple Volkswagens, all with numerous issues. The GTI has more than most cars though. I've encountered so many electrical problems, causing me to have to change the headlights and taillights numerous times. The check engine light is constantly on for unknown reasons. Even when diagnosed its constantly some ridiculous problem that never occurs in other vehicles. The repair on this car is extremely expensive, more than I've ever paid du... (more)

I am an avid VW fan, this is the second GTI I have owned, and the 5th Golf/Rabbit incarnation I have owned. I especially like the interior build quality of this vehicle, it stands out in comparison to some of the previous vehicles I have owned. The interior is in amazing shape for a car that is 11 years old, and there is a quiet ride as far as squeaks or rattles go, and the leather seats have held up remarkably well also. This car is fully loaded with the exception of the OnStar system, which I don't think would suit me very well personally - not that there is actually anything wrong with the system itself. The VR6 is incredible! For the level of performance that the VR^ offers, there is a surprising level of fuel economy. The high cost of turbo repair/replacement is certainly a consid... (more)
Story
It is FAST! I won't get into specifics, but if the need arises to get somewhere on the back roads of Tennessee quickly - that is not a problem! The handling of the GTI is superb, and the VR6 offers a level of performance that simply adds to the fun.
Pros
It is fun to drive! The performance is spectacular! I especially like the fact that it is not a turbo - simply because the price of repair or replacement is high. The interior has held up remarkably well too.
Cons
The 6 speed manual transmission is geared pretty close, so I find myself shifting a lot! It is part of the fun in driving it, but honestly, skipping a gear or two is easier!

It was love at first sight for this little spit fire. The styling of the body lines is classic yet modern, which makes it distinctive from the other sport hatchbacks. It is quick and agile, which makes it fun to drive. Great on gas if you can keep your foot out of the throttle, which can be hard to do at times because of the snappy 1.8 liter turbo. It has plenty of room in the hatch area and even more room if you fold down the rear seats. The styling and amenities of the interior in my model, which has leather seats, made you feel like you where in a high-end German vehicle. The overall quality of materials and fit and finish where excellent. The only issues I have had with this vehicle has been parts wearing out with age. For example, the front suspension bushings have been replaced. ... (more)
Story
With a trailer hitch on the car, I once hauled a lawn tractor on a 4x8 foot trailer. This was a fairly large lawn tractor (48" deck). However, the car handled the weight no problem. While driving home the lawn mower, I had a large jacked up diesel truck. Pull up next to me on the highway and give me a thumbs up. Guess he was impressed and approved. I own a 12' fishing kayak and usually use our... (more)
Pros
Fuel efficient. Excellent handling. Quick acceleration. Great styling interior and exterior. Highly versatile. Tons of aftermarket parts and support. Maneuverability.
Cons
Cost of parts can be high. Design of rear hatch lock.
