I really like the versatility of the GTI, being a hatchback I can put the dog in the car and have room for other things too. The little 1.8 Turbo engine does a pretty good job at getting up and going. It's decently quick for such a small engine. The car was pretty stylish for the generation. It's smooth and sleek compared to some other 2003 cars. The ride is very comfortable and it does a great job in the steering category. The seats are a little uncomfortable and take some adjusting to get used to. At this point I've got it adjusted to where I have no uncomfortability, but my passengers sometimes complain. You can feel how light the car is around corners and it sticks to the road quite well. There are virtually no blind spots in the car because of the large rear windows and hatch. I d... (more)
Story
It's quite fun to drive around and speed. I've done a bunch of the maintenance myself and it's fun to learn about a new model of car.
Pros
Performance, handling, design, MPG.
Cons
Maintenance costs and frequency.

The car is an awesome machine. It handles really well. Better than most cars in the price range. It's power output is pretty good. It's small and nimble so it can fit in tight spaces. It looks amazing. The only thing I don't like are the parts are expensive on this car. Finding a good mechanic to work on it is a hassle too. A lot of people won't work on it for some reason. I'm not sure why. Overall, great car, great value. Also, the resale value is pretty good !
Story
There was a GTI meet in my area. GTI's from all areas came and we all just hung out. It must've been over 100 of them. It is a cool community where everyone helps each other.
Pros
The car is beautiful. It's small and not too big. That's good because it fits in tight spaces, whether you're trying to park it or you're swerving in and out of lanes. Just kidding, don't do that. The car is amazing to look at. The handling is out of this world. It's very responsive. The power is really good also. It's fast, but not too fast. It's fast enough to have fun, which is a huge plus. The resale value is pretty good, so if you want to trade it in down the road for another one, you don't have to worry about getting robbed.
Cons
The parts are a little expensive on it. I'm guessing because it's German, but not everyone will work on it. It's hard finding a trustworthy mechanic who will work on this car. The parts could be cheaper, but other than that, it shouldn't be that big of a problem. It's a small problem compared to the awesome car you'll be driving.

I really like the interior and exterior quality of my VW GTI. The styling is great, it's sporty, has heritage, and can still fit a good deal of stuff when the back seats are folded flat. The only difficulty I have experienced is driving on some of the very rough roads around here with potholes. The tires are very slim and easily punctured, due to the large rim size.
Story
I drove this car from Houston to northern Louisiana in the pouring rain and it was a great drive. The car cruises at 80+ mph without feeling like you are going fast at all or in danger of sliding or losing control.
Pros
I love the tornado red color and the lighting package. The lighting package is definitely worth it and makes the car look much more expensive. The response time of the screen is above average for a car display. I also appreciate Volkswagen's quality building - the seams are fully welded, as compared to some other brands which spot weld only.
Cons
The tornado red paint actually is very hard to take care of. I am very careful with washing cars. I always hand wash them myself and never use the brush even at the hand car wash stations (bring my own sponge). I also would never ever go through a full automatic car wash. However, I still see swirls and defects in the paint when I look at it closely, usually while waxing. 99% Of the time you can't see them, but when you get within a few inches of the car and it's washed and shiny you can see the paint defects. I think it's the matte colors that show more.
