2005 Volkswagen Golf GTI - Terrible, unreliable, problematic

I acquired this car about a year ago. Since I have purchased it, it has been nothing but problems. I loved the acceleration and look of the vehicle as well as the turbo, hence my purchase. It has a small and sleek look which is great and appealed to me since I am younger. But, Volkswagens have always been unreliable. Since getting it, it has broken down twice. I had replaced the headlights and taillights two times each! That's ridiculous for two years. Especially for something as minor as headlights and taillights. I have also replaced interior lights. The check engine light has come on over and over again with no solution, which is also typical for Volkswagens. Well over $1,000 dollars has gone into this car in over a year. The EPC light tends to come on and the car loses all power. T... (more)
Story
When I first purchased the car, the turbo had such a great pull as soon as I took it out of the parking lot that I knew I had to have it! My friend test drove it with me and said, "You NEED this car!"
Pros
The body is sleek and attractive. I love the look of it overall. The sunroof is a great feature and I love that it can go up a little or completely slide for more air. Adding rims to this car makes it look even nicer, which the previous owner had done before me and it has gotten this car so many compliments. It stands out since it is a hatchback and you don't see many of these cars on the road. I also love the power in this car, when its working. The turbo is a nice boost of speed and you can easily get to top speeds on the highway, much faster than cars usually can catch up. The interior ... (more)
Cons
The top negative things were the uncountable issues that this vehicle has had in just under a year! I can't even say it was poor ownership, as I have owned multiple Volkswagens, all with numerous issues. The GTI has more than most cars though. I've encountered so many electrical problems, causing me to have to change the headlights and taillights numerous times. The check engine light is constantly on for unknown reasons. Even when diagnosed its constantly some ridiculous problem that never occurs in other vehicles. The repair on this car is extremely expensive, more than I've ever paid du... (more)

I am an avid VW fan, this is the second GTI I have owned, and the 5th Golf/Rabbit incarnation I have owned. I especially like the interior build quality of this vehicle, it stands out in comparison to some of the previous vehicles I have owned. The interior is in amazing shape for a car that is 11 years old, and there is a quiet ride as far as squeaks or rattles go, and the leather seats have held up remarkably well also. This car is fully loaded with the exception of the OnStar system, which I don't think would suit me very well personally - not that there is actually anything wrong with the system itself. The VR6 is incredible! For the level of performance that the VR^ offers, there is a surprising level of fuel economy. The high cost of turbo repair/replacement is certainly a consid... (more)
Story
It is FAST! I won't get into specifics, but if the need arises to get somewhere on the back roads of Tennessee quickly - that is not a problem! The handling of the GTI is superb, and the VR6 offers a level of performance that simply adds to the fun.
Pros
It is fun to drive! The performance is spectacular! I especially like the fact that it is not a turbo - simply because the price of repair or replacement is high. The interior has held up remarkably well too.
Cons
The 6 speed manual transmission is geared pretty close, so I find myself shifting a lot! It is part of the fun in driving it, but honestly, skipping a gear or two is easier!

I bought this car used. I had done a lot of research before buying the car, and over all I am happy with my choice. I chose The VW JETTA TDI. I specifically wanted the TDI for the diesel economy. I do get close to 50 miles to the gallon, and that makes a huge difference since I put close to 25000 miles a year on it. However, beyond the , mileage What I was looking for was the durability of a diesel engine. Diesel engines are designed to last for 500,000 miles or more, where as a gas engine is designed to last about 200,000 miles. However, no matter how long the engine lasts, there are other things that go wrong with a car, and I would say that my VW has had more than its share of "minor" problems. Then to aggravate these minor problems VW has made some things much harder to fix than th... (more)
Pros
I love the fact that I get nearly 50 miles to the gallon. I like that even with 250,000 miles on the car the engine is going strong. I like the way the car handles on tight corners and on the open road, and I find the ride to be smoother than that of so called performance cars.
Cons
This car has electric windows, just like most cars do these days. However, unlike most cars the window regulator is extremely expensive and hard to replace. The first time I had one go out I opted to spend $300 to have some one else fix it. Most cars would be under $100. The second time it happened I decided to do the work myself. It was $150 in parts (most cars are under $50) and it took me 6 hours over 3 days to do it. I have replaced regulators on other cars in under an hour. This is just one example of the extra that needs to be done on Maintenance.
